This is a more accessible area to view the bison if you cannot hike up moderate hills. Otherwise you need to park at the barn/Hart park and walk up to the overlook. I visited both locations to view the bison, because at the time the bison were hanging out on top of the hill and it was hard to see them from this location. The other location (the road from Hart park) offered a better view. This is free, and actually the end/start of the bison trailhead for Hart park. Bring tennis shoes.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with school-age children who can handle moderate uphill hiking and have the patience for wildlife spotting. The bison are the headline draw, and viewing from two different locations maximises the chance of a close encounter. The barnyard feeding adds a hands-on element for younger children who find the trail distances challenging.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Follow Google Maps to the second parking area — it's closer to key viewing points
If bison aren't visible from one spot, try the alternate overlook further up the trail
🎟️Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection — trails are mostly exposed
🚗The barnyard feeding area is open daily except Mondays — check hours before visiting

Beautiful hidden trail. beautiful views. the creek is dried up. only part of the trail is shaded so wear sunscreen and a hat. several outlooks. bummed that the museum is no longer open to the public but it was cool to see it. and the best part of my hike was the bison!!! majestic and beautiful to see them up close (do not disturb!)

It's amazing to discover live bison in Newhall, CA. If following Google Maps, take the second road to parking. The original bison were donated to the William S. Hart organization by Walt Disney.

This is either a short petting zoo or could be a long quiet day at the park it's great for kids because they have animals that are friendly and can pet or feed it has a large field area with shady trees and benches/bbq pits so overall would recommend for a quiet day or just some family time. No charge folks I took my group of autistic adults/special needs that I instruct at a day center and didn't pay a dime.
