1 / 2APEX Climbing and Spa
📍 Watkinsville, GA
APEX in Watkinsville offers lead, top rope, and bouldering on walls up to 40 feet, plus indoor and outdoor climbing. Kids' birthday parties are hosted here, and staff are praised for patience with young and first-time climbers.
I’ve climbed at a bunch of gyms, and APEX is honestly one of my favorites anywhere near Athens ga. It’s new and has almost everything—lead, top rope, mostly bouldering, indoor and outdoor—and the 40’ walls are a big deal if you’re used to smaller gyms nearby. You can actually train and progress here, not just mess around for a session. (They told me they plan to add a training board in the future) What I really like is the vibe. It’s super clean and modern, but still feels local and welcoming (not corporate at all). You can tell it’s run by local people who care a lot—lots of youth programs, camps, etc. Only tip: weekends can get pretty busy (it’s super family-friendly), so if you want a quieter session maybe avoid peak hours. They do have some areas and rules to keep things manageable, but it’s just something to know. Off-peak though, it’s awesome—strong crew of serious climbers, people are friendly, and it’s easy to end up working problems together and sharing beta. Overall just a really solid gym. def worth checking out
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Strongest fit for kids aged 7 and up who are ready to try structured climbing. The 40-foot walls give room to progress beyond beginner routes, making it worthwhile for families who return regularly. First-timers are well supported by staff — no prior experience needed.

“Our New Family Favorite Apex has become our go-to spot, and honestly, it’s changed our routine. Our kids light up the moment we pull into the parking lot—they’re already talking about which routes they want to tackle. Watching them work through the climbs, getting stronger and braver with each visit, never gets old. And here’s the best part: my wife and I actually get to relax while they’re climbing. There’s something perfect about settling in, grabbing a coffee, (can’t wait for their own coffee bar to open!) and just enjoying the energy of the gym while the kids do their thing. No stress, no rushing—just quality time together as a family. What really sets Apex apart is the people. The owners are incredibly welcoming and personable—they genuinely care about their community and make you feel like part of the Apex family from day one. The staff matches that energy perfectly. They’re friendly, helpful, and always ready to answer questions or offer encouragement. They cheer the kids on, offer tips without being pushy, and go out of their way to make sure everyone has an amazing experience. If you’re looking for a place where your family can have real fun, stay active, and feel truly welcomed and supported, Apex is it. We can’t recommend it enough.”
