1 / 3Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
📍 Cass, NY
Historic steam railroad in Cass, WV carrying families to Bald Knob — the state's highest point — through Appalachian mountain scenery. Restored lumbering town, railroad museum, and gift shop on-site. All ages welcome, toddlers included.
We went here on a trip through WV because my wife's father used to take them here when she was a kid. The museum was very nice and even the tourist store had some neat items. We did not ride the train but I am sure that would be fun. The docent/information guy in the museum was very helpful. His name was Nathaniel (a young guy). I asked him a question and he had so much information and knowledge that we spent a long time speaking with him. He was also drawing an incredibly detailed drawing of a locomotive. He had a lot of talent. If you go there, don't just ignore the museum, spend some time. It was extremely interesting.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A genuinely memorable outing for train-enthusiast families and anyone drawn to authentic heritage experiences. The steam locomotives and mountain scenery do the heavy lifting regardless of children's ages. No cell service on the mountain enhances the unplugged atmosphere rather than being a drawback.

“One of the last incline capable steam engines open to the public. The train takes a trip to the highest point in West Virginia which is Bald Knob. Very peaceful scenic tour that is great as you'd expect it to be. Bag lunch available with the trip but you can bring your own food if you like. Cell phone service is sketchy at best, but to me that makes it even better. Go with the website to explore the many different options and trips. Reservations are highly recommended, as this attraction is booked up regularly. There are overnight accommodations for any number of guests although I did not stay over.”

“Took my husband here as my Christmas gift to him. Overall we had a great time, and the scenery was beautiful on the winter train. There was just enough snow to look pretty that had fallen but without impeding our trip here. There are a few things to note: there is no WiFi on the train and no cell service here or anywhere in the surrounding area. Download offline maps and songs if you want or bring a book. The music on the train left something to be desired, it wasn’t our favorite. The provided lunch does not accommodate for dietary needs and restrictions. I am gluten free (not by choice) and I was able to have the lunch meat, veggies, mayo for the sandwich but no bun. Other than that we had a great time and it was well worth it, especially for the 5 hour train which ended up being more like 6 hours.”
