“I reached out via email to inquire about ice skating aids (such as a skating walker), as I have an impairment and wanted to approach skating in a safe, controlled way. Instead of answering my question, I received a response advising against ice skating altogether. I did not realize that the responder (signed as Taylor) was an orthopedic specialist and in a position to make medical recommendations, as those decisions are best left to a healthcare provider who understands an individual’s condition and limitations. My inquiry was about access and adaptation, not permission. The response left a very negative impression and made me feel discouraged from participating in an activity I was hoping to approach safely and confidently. I would encourage more awareness around inclusivity and how to support individuals seeking modified or beginner-friendly options, rather than discouraging them outright. 💔”
