We visited the Colebrookdale Railroad for the Once Upon a Valentine brunch on a train. We sat in the Valhalla car, which was undergoing restoration but it was actually really neat to see the work in progress on the interior of the car. Our only (minor) complaint was that it could have been a little warmer in the car. Otherwise it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Colebrookdale Railroad really goes all-out with the theming at their station yard. From the lovely station house, to the statuary, to the actual gas lantern streetlights, and the period music being played it was probably the most immersive train excursion we've taken. Everything was still decorated for Christmas which added a nice touch as well. The platform is well-kept and they have a loudspeaker system to it was easy to hear announcements and updates. And I have to say that their passenger cars are some of the nicest I've seen with stained glass in the windows, uniform paint jobs, and shiny brass accents. On board we enjoyed some violin music performed live by Noah, an accomplished young player. (Be sure to stop and give him a cash tip as you're leaving the train.) It's a relatively short ride in terms of distance, and the train moves slowly the entire time. Throughout the ride there was a pre-recorded narrative telling you about the history of the railroad and many of the sights along the way. We started our brunch with cocktails. A mimosa for her, and an Engineered Old Fashioned for me, which was essentially a smoked old fashioned and very tasty. The meal was good, standard breakfast fare. Nothing to rave about but perfectly acceptable. Our eggs were completely cooked, which is impressive when cooking in bulk as you often end up with a watery mess. We even had lovely company. We shared our table with a younger couple from Baltimore who came up to take the ride. We had several common interests and enjoyed chatting with them throughout the trip. As we left the train they handed out carnations. In all, this was a totally enjoyable experience and we plan to come back in the future for other excursions, and try the experience in another car just to see the difference. I'd recommend Colebrookdale RR to anyone who enjoys trains.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with older children and teens who appreciate immersive historical atmosphere and can manage a two-plus-hour seated journey. The themed dining excursions are genuinely memorable for special occasions.

What a fantastic time this was! We dined in the Lounge Car (Maine Central) which we thought was the most beautiful one offered. Service was fantastic with a quick preboarding announcement in the station, followed by conductors showing us where to go for our particular reservation. Our car had two attendants who were very sweet and attentive. The food was good, dessert was excellent. The whole trip flowed well from start to finish. It was (with the windchill) about -10 the day of our trip so the toilets on the train were frozen haha. But they gave us multiple warnings about this so we could use the ones at the station and since the excursion was only 2 hours it wasn't a big deal. We will definitely be back!

For our NewYears eve for the end of 2025 we wanted to try a new experience. We heard about the train through friends, and made reservations for the train and hotel. We arrived at the train 30 minutes pryor to departing as requested. What we arrived to was a waiting area in 20° weather without any heaters and not being allowed to board the train. We were informed before we boarded, we should use the restroom because out of 7 rail cars only 2 had a restroom. So let's see, over 100 people, 2 restrooms and a 2 hour train ride for new years celebration. Everyone eating and drinking, not a good scenario. When the hors d'oeuvre were being served, some were good but most were cold and even the hot chocolate was cold. Entertainment was 1 guitar player who had to cover all 7 cars. When we heard him playing, he was quite talented. That was for about 15 minutes out of a 2 hour ride. Fortunately we had a lively conversation with the couple sitting across from us. I'm going to say one and done for this event for us.
