Had a good time ice skating in the middle of the city. Lot of beginners so newbies won't be feeling out of place. Rental skates can be made slightly more comfortable. Parking was difficult to find.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families seeking a seasonal, one-of-a-kind city skating experience around the holidays. The beginner-friendly crowd makes it accessible for kids trying ice skating for the first time. Parking in Union Square is expensive and scarce β€” public transit is the practical choice for families.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Arrive by public transit β€” BART and Muni stop within walking distance, as street parking near Union Square is very difficult to find.
⏰The rink is seasonal and closed from January through October; plan visits between November and early January only.
🎟️Arrive early in the day or on weekday sessions to avoid peak weekend crowds.
πŸš—Bring your own gloves β€” cold hands make skating harder for young kids.

β€œUnion Square is a pretty solid part of SF, and the holiday ice rink is a fun thing to do there around the end of the year. It’s crowded, parking sucks, and the rentable lockers are kind of trash, but you can’t beat the holiday cheer of a little ice skating. I’d recommend trying it at least once if you’re in the area.”

β€œI can't skate on ice because I just can't let go of my fear of falling. However, there are lots of happy skaters when I walk by. Sometimes, I have something in my head that causes me to grouse a bit. I get pilloried and ridiculed behind my back. Call me King Koopa giving has back to the scratchers. Renting back scratchers when I'm grousing really completes my clobberfest vibe. Feel good while I don't and forget it.”
