1 / 2Hudson River Rail Excursions
π Manhattan, NY
Vintage train excursions aboard restored 1940s railroad cars along the Hudson River. Best for families seeking a nostalgic rail experience, though communication issues may occur.
We had a wonderful experience on this magical train ride from New York to Chicago and two days later from Chicago to New York. From the moment we arrived to the train station, we were attended by Kevin, the program director, with the onboarding and upon boarding the train, we are welcomed by the wonderful staff, Lou the main ring leader, who is super informative about the train route and interesting landmarks along the railway and accompanied by Brianne, who assisted with serving our meals, dinner and breakfast, that were prepared with love by Sarah the Chef. We highly recommend the Hudson River Rail Excursions, which you will not soon forget. Sincerely, Nelson and Karen Zaldivar
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families seeking a nostalgic train adventure who can overlook operational hiccups. The experience itself appears magical with knowledgeable staff, but be prepared for potential communication issues and limited dietary options. Consider this for older children who can appreciate the historical aspect.

βNice train ride, and nice informative staff who care about what they're doing. But a few issues. First, while waiting in a big line at the lounge before going down to board, a staff member said a few words about how things would work during a 2 hour layover in Albany. This was supposed to be important information. But he was just speaking unaided in a loud area, and I'm sure many of us couldn't hear him. We certainly couldn't. Next, they suggest the train is a nostalgic 1940s experience, but once on our way they said the car we were in was built in 1957 -- and it looked it. Also, while buying the tickets online, we were asked about dietary preferences, and we noted that one person was a vegetarian, and one a vegan. When we went up to get our lunch on board -- which wasn't announced, BTW; we just noticed that everyone else had some food -- we were told that there was nothing vegan. So we ended up with a sad "California Roll" and some soggy potato chips. Then there's a two hour layover in Albany, and they warn you more than once to not miss the return train, so we actually just waited in the station. But when the return train was ready to board, there was no announcement, and when we finally inquired, they said we'd better rush and get on the train.β

βEarlier in the spring I made a reservation for a rountrip ride to Albany. I had an issue with the order and it took them weeks to respond. They offered a solution to the issue and I agreed. However, after months of waiting and unanswered emails, I still do not have my issue resolved. I sent emails to Kevin Phalon, I called their number and left voicemails. I have been more than patient so I finally asked for a refund and still no response and I donβt know if Iβll be able to get a refund. I have no way of getting in touch with them. I was excited for this train ride, but their customer service leaves lots to be desired. I do not recommend Hudson River Rail.β
