1 / 2Phoenix Rock Gym
📍 Tempe, AZ
Indoor rock climbing gym with 17,000+ sq ft of climbing surface, 30-foot walls across multiple difficulty levels, mandatory hands-on safety orientation, and welcoming programs for children as young as 2 with adult belayers.
Awesome gym. Went with some new people and some experienced and they did an excellent job of teaching the new people how to safely belay. Yes they have some goofy practices with the way the grigris are attached and the ground tether, but it was easy to get used to. Taping climbs was a lot easier to get used to than I expected, just need to read a bit more ahead. Taping also means you get a lot more routes per wall which is a huge plus! The upstairs “museum” area is super cool. Was awesome to check out all the old gear. Would highly recommend for new or experienced climbers. Would be happy to head back :)
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A strong first-climbing-experience venue for families with children aged 2 and up — the mandatory safety training removes the guesswork and staff actively coach through the session. Belaying is more physically demanding than climbing itself; parents should expect an upper-body workout.

“It was our first visit because my daughter said she wanted to try climbing. The facility was really large and had many climbing zones with various levels of difficulty. The indoor space was full of people climbing, and it looked really cool. The staff gave us detailed explanations and even taught us how to tie knots and handle the ropes throughout, which was very helpful. My daughter said climbing was fun and wants to come often. It's actually more tiring for the parent holding the rope at the bottom than for the one climbing, though!”

“I think this is currently the best gym in Phoenix for folks who want to top rope. They take safety very seriously which I appreciate as it has been my issue with other gyms that I’ve tried. The routes are varied but there is plenty of really challenging routes for more experienced climbers. There are always people of all ages here and it is a very warm and inviting place.”

“Excellent gym! We had a nice lesson from a video and instructor on how to set up for 2 adults, our 4 yo and 2yo. Everyone did great and had a lot of fun. Also has someone come around for coaching. We’ll be getting a family membership!”
