Smodcastle Cinemas was bought by Kevin Smith a few years ago. It’s the movie theater he grew up going to. Kevin has renovated and revamped the theater into a stellar experience for movie-goers in general and his fans in particular. The décor keeps that retro, 80s-style, small movie theater vibe while adding posters from Kevin Smith’s full catalog. You’ll see foreign posters for Clerks and Mallrats next to banners for Bluntman & Chronic. The theater signs still use actual letters instead of LED screens. The lobby has a beautiful mural that spans Kevin’s varied career. You’ll even find a lot of signatures from the actors that have passed through the doors. The staff is fantastic! They are super helpful with tickets, concessions, and with merch sales. You may even recognize a few faces from Kevin’s movies. The theater is always kept clean. The audio and video quality are top-notch for everything from modern blockbusters to throwback screenings. Just like The Stash, Kevin has multiple events at Smodcastle to help generate revenue and buzz. They’ve had screenings of View Askew films with the actors such as Joey Lauren Adams, Jason Lee, and Ken Jeong. They’ve had Q&A’s with the Russo Brothers and indie film screenings with Nick Frost. Kevin and his daughter, Harley Quinn, have even recorded sessions of their various podcasts at Smodcastle. Smodcastle was also featured heavily in Smith’s The 4:30 Movie. They even held the premiere at the theater with most of the cast in attendance. You can usually catch a screening of The 4:30 Movie at Smodcastle, so you can get extra meta by watching a movie where the movie takes place. This is a fantastic movie theater from start to finish. You’ll enjoy your experience whether you’re catching a first-run, opening weekend movie or attending a special event. Corporate movie theater chains can’t replicate the feeling of a small-town theater. The movies are the same, but the experience at a place like Smodcastle is one you’ll remember long after the credits roll.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with older children and teens who appreciate film culture or are Kevin Smith fans. The special event screenings and Q&As create genuinely memorable experiences that chain cinemas cannot replicate. Younger children can attend standard screenings without issue, and the intimate scale keeps the experience relaxed and personal.

Overview

Smodcastle Cinemas is filmmaker Kevin Smith's restored hometown theater, blending current film releases with special events, Q&A sessions, and celebrity appearances. The interior retains its retro 1980s small-theater character — letter board signage, no LED displays — as housing Clerks crew memorabilia throughout. The concession stand covers the basics.
