Steamtown National Historic Site
📍 Scranton, NY
Free NPS museum in Scranton housing historic steam and diesel locomotives across indoor barn exhibits and outdoor displays. Seasonal train rides available including the Holiday Express Christmas experience.
The Steamtown National Historic Site is a great railroad museum for kids and adults. We bought tickets for the Moscow: Holiday Express and it was a fun experience. Each passenger car was decorated with Christmas decor. The train ride was about 45 minutes to and back from Moscow Station. They did a great job decorating Moscow Station and there were activities for the kids to do and meet Santa. The museum itself was very informative and had a lot of objects and equipment related to the steam-railroading era. The railroad system transformed the US economy in the 1800s and early 1900s. We had a great experience overall and would come back again when it’s warmer.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Families with children who respond to large machinery, transportation history, or engineering will find this site absorbing across age groups. The free museum entry makes it low-risk for families testing a child's interest level. Seasonal train rides add a tangible experience beyond static displays.

“A fantastic national park site that is great for train buffs and adults and kids alike. The exhibits are full of interesting facts, history and artifacts. There are tons of steam trains inside the barns and outside. You can ride on a steam train. The ride is not long but just being able to be on an older steam train is a treat. Make sure you stop by the theater and watch the short film, it's a must see anytime we stop by. I have always found the park rangers to be friendly and helpful and fully invested in the park.”

“I was 6 years old the last time I saw Union Pacific Big boy 4012 at steam town Bellows falls Vermont. Steam town Cranston Pennsylvania was awesome to visit. The museum is well put together with a good selection of steam, oil, and diesel locomotives. There is a lot to see, from the parking lot to the round house and the technology museum. I went in November so the cab to 4012 was closed for the season. I will be back in the summer to see the inside of Big boy 4012.”

“I’ve been to Steamtown now 3 times. The NPS staff and Rangers are always extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. Plenty of Parking, easy to get to with GPS. Museum inside is awesome, outside displays are unique. There are usually daily rides on one of trains, and occasionally longer excursions for a price.”
