1 / 3The New Jersey Museum of Transportation
π Wall Township, NY
Pine Creek Railroad, one of the US's oldest narrow gauge exhibits, runs authentic century-old equipment on a loop within Allaire State Park. Entirely volunteer-operated. Birthday parties and educational field trips available.
I rode the train here on a very hot day and it was still a very enjoyable experience. The ride is ~20 minutes and does two laps around the tracks. It seems to be scheduled to leave twice and hour on the half hour so if you dont have tickets in advance come before :00 or :30. Tickets cost $6/person. I thought the price was reasonable even though itβs a short ride because the train is over 100 years old and relies on volunteers for maintenance. The ride is really loud and you canβt hear most of what the man on the loudspeaker is saying when heβs talking about the history but honestly I wasnβt listening anyway.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with train-enthusiast children who value authenticity over polish. The century-old equipment and all-volunteer operation create a living museum atmosphere that no purpose-built attraction can replicate. Check seasonal operating schedules carefully before visiting β the museum closes in winter months.

βI just wanted to express my gratitude. I was there on Saturday December 13th for the Santa train ride and the guy in Santa was great when I told him my adult son who has autism is a big fan of him he took a moment to interact with him outside and during the train ride same with my daughter. So thank you for an unforgettable moment and to the Santa for being so good. Will definitely be going back thank youβ

βWonderful afternoon for the kids. Took a ride on the Pine Creek Railroad. Charming. Kids loved it. Afterwards strolled the village. Only hiccup is there was a flea market, so they made us pay to enter the village even though we werenβt there for the flea market.β

βImpressive railway museum with a number of interesting exhibits. I especially enjoyed riding their train on a loop around the depot with scenic views throughout. The enthusiasm of the volunteers working at the museum was contagious.β

Overview
The New Jersey Museum of Transportation has operated Pine Creek Railroad since 1952, making it one of the country's longest-running narrow gauge railway exhibits. Trains run on a loop from the historic Freneau Station with two circuits per ride. All equipment is authentic and over 100 years old, maintained and operated entirely by volunteers. The museum sits within Allaire State Park, which surrounds the experience with additional walking and village areas.
