Came across this cool adventure while scrolling on YouTube. I thought this would be a fun activity for my mom and I to do while I'm visiting and mom was done for it. When you check-in, they provide you with water bottles, a set of helmets with chip straps but you can bring your own helmet if you choose so they provide a complimentary bag of popcorn. Each rail bike seats two people. There is a guide in the first bike (up front) and then there is another guide in the last rail bike (in the back). We sat in the third rail bike in the front. It was a beautiful day with great views of citrus trees, the mountains and an animal farm/farmers market. It's a 10 mile ride. Don't worry, it's not at all strenuous. If you ever get tired of peddling, you can use the electric switch and you can ride without peddling. When you reach the 5 mile mark, we'll all stop to have lunch/break for about 15 mins. You can't pick from the citrus trees since they are private property. My mother and I just ended up taking a few pictures and asking some questions about the rail bike and the tour guides did a great job answering our questions with a touch of humor. They are great individuals and made the experience fun. You can bring your own food but the storage space is limited, so nothing too bulky. They only have a port-a-potry but it was clean. Once lunch is over, they turn the rail bike around on the rails and we head back toward the station. On our way back, we stopped at the farm/farmers market where you can pet animals, pick your own strawberries and do a little shopping at the farmers market. We were there for about 25 mins. We had a great time and found out that they have rail biking in the Redwoods call Skunk trail (I believe). You already know I'm gonna have to experience that! Over all, this was fun and something different that your family can do together. I wish they had something like this where we live. Our city would have a ball with this type of activity.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for multi-generational groups who want a gentle outdoor adventure with genuine visual payoff. The electric assist removes fitness as a barrier, making it realistic for grandparents and young children riding together. The farm stop adds a structured mid-ride activity rather than a simple turnaround.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Bring a rolled towel or cushion if you're under 5'4" β€” seat height can cause lower back strain on longer stretches
⏰Water bottles and helmets are provided at check-in and you can bring your own helmet
🎟️Pack light β€” bike storage is sparse to small personal items
πŸš—The farm stop includes petting zoo and farmers market access β€” budget time for both

β€œThe rail bike trip was a really fun and active way to see the local orchards, farms, produce stand, and petting zoo. Riding across the rails when the train signals were down was a special memory and kids at a local school waved at us while they were on recess. There were well spaced rest stops and the guides were very friendly and helpful. The only recommendation is to bring a rolled towel or pillow to set behind your back if you are short as the seat adjustments are somewhat limited (it was challenging for me at 5 ft, but not an issue for my partner who is 5 ft 4in). A seat cushion may also improve comfort for some riders. The charcuterie bag we purchased from SunBurst was also a nice addition to our trip. We really enjoyed this event, thank the SunBurst guide team who made it lots fun, and hope to bring others along another time.”

β€œWe booked a Sunburst Railbike tour to celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday, and it was truly unforgettable. Riding through the citrus orchards of Santa Paulaβ€”where her parents once livedβ€”brought back so many memories for her. The scenery was beautiful, the ride was easy and enjoyable, and she even cried happy tears from the nostalgia. The crew went above and beyond to make the experience special. They were kind, patient, and incredibly accommodating, making sure my mom felt comfortable the entire time. Thanks to them, our little birthday adventure became a treasured family moment. Highly recommend Sunburst Railbikes for anyone looking for a meaningful and memorable outing!”

β€œBucket List … we enjoyed every minute of this experience! The staff are professional and kind - and we’re always concerned about our safety! Being out in the open air, the views of the orchards and mountains were spectacular! Prances Farm was great, they have restrooms, handwashing station and the sweetest animals and a charming market to buy honey, healthy snacks, and fresh produce! We’re going again but with a bunch of friends!!!”
