📍 Wilmington, NY
59-year-old heritage railroad running scenic rides through Delaware's Red Clay Valley on trains over 100 years old. Special event trains include Christmas, Easter Bunny Express, and Halloween specials. Free parking on-site.
I have taken several train excursions in different cities but I am 100% sure this is one of the greatest trains I have ever taken. In terms of price, it is totally a steal! It is not a stretch to say it is the bang for the bucks! Not sure if anyone couldn't go along with my review. In general, you should pay around $ 40 or higher plus tax for other train excursions in other states. It is just for $18~ 20. There are lots of special event trains like autumn leaf special, Christmas special, Halloween trip, etc. You can buy ticket online or on site. But highly recommend to buy online ahead for special trains. Parking lot is available and even for free! All staffs are basically volunteers. Seems like every staff definitely enjoys serving and helping out all passengers! Super friendly and nice! Highly recommend!!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A standout experience for families with children of any age who haven't ridden a heritage steam railroad before. The seasonal themed rides are the top draw for children aged 3–10, and the genuine vintage equipment adds weight that replica attractions lack. Winter rides require warm layers — open or unheated cars make cold weather feel colder.

“This attraction is DEFINITELY Delaware's hidden gem! When entering the building to pick up your tickets, you are welcomed with Historic Delaware. The station provides plenty of historic readings and pictures while waiting for the famous call "All Aboard!" to passengers on the train. Once you've found your assigned seating, the train ride will stop traffic to take you through various cities, and over streams and lakes, while blowing its "I'm Here" whistle, which will put a smile on the kids faces! If you're looking for something to do with the family, I recommend purchasing tickets as far in advance as you can because the secret is out and tickets are limited!”

“If you are thinking about getting on the Santa Claus Express ride, do it! It was quite charming to be on the train with my girls. They were all excited to see Santa and got treats from him too. The view out the window was pleasant and even though we were cold the whole time, the girls had fun just watching out the window and seeing all the Christmas lights decorations and festivities around.”

“Great experience! Homes are decorated so nicely on the ride and you even vote on what house you like best.”

Overview
The Wilmington & Western Railroad has run tourist services through the Red Clay Valley for 59 years, using locomotives and rolling stock more than a century old. Volunteer staff operate every run and bring enthusiasm that regulars consistently mention. Themed seasonal rides — including the Santa Claus Express, Holiday Lights Express, and Easter Bunny Express — sell out in advance. Families can pack lunches for day-trip-length excursions on the longer scenic routes.
