Woodland Park Zoo
π Seattle, NY
Woodland Park Zoo features giraffes, red pandas, tree kangaroos, and African Savanna displays. WildLanterns illuminated trail events and ZooTunes concerts run seasonally. Free transit via King County Metro partnership.
I'm a member of the woodland park zoo and I travel regularly and visit other zoos and it continues to be one of my favorites. The enclosures are clearly built for the animals health and ability to get space, as they should be, which means you see different things every time. They also do tons of conservation funding and are continually improving the facilities. I go to the zoo regularly to walk around as they have multiple parking lots, plenty of clean bathrooms, a coffee shop, snacks, and indoor and outdoor exhibits. Everyone is always super friendly and knowledgeable. In recent years they've started to do events like paint and sip, afternoon tea, 21+ days, octobearfest, and what not, and they are always a blast. The Wildlaterns are also amazing and part of my must do holiday activites, they get better and better every year. Whoever does their events the last few years should get a raise. When it's not too busy (with people) the bird bird dome is one of the most peaceful (and warm) places in Seattle. The conservation aviary is similarly peaceful but not warm. If you don't have kids or can get a night off, the 21plus events are a different (way better) experience. It almost seems like a different place. The animals seem to be way more active and the zoo is audibly quieter.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with kids of any age who want active animal sightings and don't mind a 4+ hour visit. Toddlers do well with the wide paths and variety of movement. WildLanterns is a genuine highlight for school-age kids and up β book early and visit on a weeknight to avoid peak crowds.

βWe recently visited WildLanterns, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The entire zoo is decorated with stunning illuminated displays β bright, detailed, and so whimsical that you feel like youβve stepped into a different world. Each area has its own theme, and you just want to stop and admire everything. We absolutely loved it. The acrobatic shows were such a highlight β energetic, fun, and beautifully done. Both kids and adults will enjoy them. And the carousel π adds the perfect festive touch, making the experience feel even more magical and family-friendly. Everything was well organized, beautifully set up, and full of holiday spirit. Itβs the perfect place to enjoy time with family, take amazing photos, and get into the winter mood.β

βWoodland Zoo is worth the visit! We went with our two kids (4 and 2), and they had a great time. Easy to walk around, plenty of shade and places to rest. The diversity of animals was impressive, and many of them were active during our visit (only the lions and giraffes were not visible). Parking was easy, having a digital map on our phones was also helpful.β

βThis was such a beautiful place to visit. The animals were all beautiful and so active! It was so fascinating. We only went for about 4 hours and if you enjoy watching animals, I recommend getting there even ealier. There were so many areas and animals, we ended up missing a section due to time restraints. Beautiful zoo. π₯°β

Overview
Woodland Park Zoo houses animals across well-designed enclosures built for space and movement β meaning sightings vary each visit. The African Savanna, tree kangaroo habitat, and red panda exhibit are standouts. WildLanterns transforms the zoo into an illuminated trail experience each holiday season, drawing big crowds on peak nights. ZooTunes concerts and Wild Encounters ambassador animal programs add variety. Two entrances (West and South) and multiple parking lots make logistics easy.
