“A Lifetime on Wheels, and It All Started Here I grew up dreaming of Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs. For me, this wasn’t just a rink — it was the center of the skating universe, the place where speed, music, lights, and Florida summer magic all collided. Every time I walked through those doors as a kid, it felt like stepping into another world. Astro Skate was the first place that made me believe skating could be a life. The speed skaters, the white Riedell boots, the confidence, the rhythm — it all left a mark on me. I wanted to be one of those skaters so badly that I worked my tail off for my 14th birthday to buy the exact skates I dreamed of: $450 low‑cut white Riedells with satellite plates, precision bearings, and wheels fast enough to make you feel like you were flying. I earned every penny. And those skates were worth every drop of sweat. My birthday is January 15th — right between my siblings — and let’s just say I didn’t grow up in the “pre‑birthday, post‑birthday, pre‑Christmas, post‑Christmas” gift zone. I was the builder, the worker, the kid who hustled for what he wanted. And when I finally laced up those white boots, I felt like I’d joined the ranks of the legends I watched at Astro Skate. This rink is tied to every era of my life. When I was in the Navy for Nuclear Power School, I came back here during breaks. I even had a brief summer connection with a skate guard — one of those innocent, fleeting moments that only happen when you’re young and the world is wide open. No regrets, just gratitude for the memory. Astro Skate is also woven into my Florida childhood through the Jordan family, who built much of the East Canal neighborhood where my grandparents lived. Their daughter Angy was my childhood crush, and instead of watching Smokey and the Bandit like everyone else, we watched Xanadu. That movie — that roller‑disco energy — shaped me. It shaped all of us who grew up in the golden age of rinks. And Astro Skate was the crown jewel. I’ve skated all over the country: Bowie‑Crofton in Maryland (where I had most of my birthdays) Skateland of Brandon Wheel‑A‑While in Rockville The rink in Frostburg The rink in Rehoboth Beach with the killer roller hockey team The Gaithersburg rink where I had my first kiss United Skates of Tampa with its legendary Jam Skate nights Every rink has its own soul. But Astro Skate Tarpon Springs? This one is home. I’ve spent years speed skating, inline skating, trail skating, and jam skating. I skated the Pinellas Trail with Tom Selhorst of Trailways and his incredible 74‑year‑old mother who could keep up with the best of us. I skated past the girl who would one day become “the Fifth Element” in my life — who remembers seeing me fly by and joking she’d marry that man someday. Skating is my life. It’s my culture. It’s my heartbeat. And Astro Skate Tarpon Springs is where that heartbeat began. If I could make one request, it would be this: Bring back an Adult Jam Skate night. The culture is alive, the passion is still here, and the community would show up in force. Astro Skate isn’t just a rink. It’s a time capsule. A launchpad. A Florida treasure. “We took our daughter here for a spirit day for her elementary school years ago. Even though she did not skate on the rink much, she did on the carpeted area and got hooked! Now our daughter takes lessons at Astro Skate to become competitive! She is learning a lot and having a blast! Great coaches and staff!”

“I was so excited to roller skate here. The music is great, the venue is fun, etc. Got my friends to join me…until we kept falling on bits of exploded roller wheels, candy wrappers, hair accessories, etc. if they would just dust mop the floor of debris, regularly, it would be a 5 star experience. After several falls on floor garbage, we quit going. 😢”
