Been here a few times to top rope, and it’s a warm, bright, welcoming place. Lots of good routes, including a big slab wall. Also an upstairs bouldering area (that I haven’t tried yet - I boulder at other CRGs). There are a good amount of lead options, though a lot overhung. There’s a big weight room. On the negative side, I will say having only a single shower in each the bathrooms is tough. The staff is super helpful. They helped me do my top rope test, helped me with questions, and Thomas led a great lead class today (4/13/2026). He was patient and informative, serious for the parts that needed it, and approachable for all my questions and nerves. Can’t wait to keep practicing!

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children ages 7 and up who want to try multiple climbing disciplines in one visit. The top rope and auto-belay setup is beginner-accessible, as the bouldering area suits more experienced young climbers. Kids summer camps and birthday parties are available for groups.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘First-time visitors should head to the top rope or auto-belay walls β€” they're the most accessible entry point for kids
⏰Shorter climbers may find some bouldering routes reach-dependent β€” the top rope area has broader route variety
🎟️Kids programs and summer camps can be booked through the CRG website under the Stoneham location

β€œEDIT: A year later and climbs are unfortunately still set inequitably for short climbers. The other CRGs in the area do a much better job of setting equitable climbs. I'm changing my rating to 3 stars as it's difficult to have an enjoyable bouldering session here due to the setting. Clean gym, nice staff. A decent amount of bouldering and top role and a good amount of lead. There's a vending machine for snacks and a bubbler for water. My one area of growth for this gym is the boulder setting. After climbing in Montreal and Germany, the setting here feels a bit boring. It also feels skewed towards tall people, as there have been climbs I couldn't even start. I was surprised that this was more of an issue in American gyms than German gyms considering the average height in Germany is taller! If the boulder setting had a bit more interesting moves and did not have as many morphos it would be 5 stars!”

Overview

Central Rock Gym Stoneham offers one of the more complete climbing setups in the CRG Massachusetts network: a large slab wall, top rope and lead routes, an upstairs bouldering section, and a weight room. The gym is well-lit and consistently described as clean and welcoming. Kids programs, summer camps, and party hosting are all offered. One reviewer notes that bouldering route-setting skews toward taller climbers β€” worth knowing for shorter kids attempting bouldering grades.
