1 / 3Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
📍 Colorado Springs, AZ
Highly rated mountainside zoo in Colorado Springs featuring interactive giraffe encounters, penguin and elephant exhibits, keeper talks, and panoramic valley views. Steep terrain throughout — advance online tickets required.
This is a wonderful place for a family outing, friend day trip, a date day or any kind of occasion. Pre-buy tickets online is a must! Plan before you go, we did not! So we had to scramble a little bit we drove 90 minutes to here. Technically I flew 4.5 hours and then drove almost 2. Go up to the Shrine of the Sun after you check in and get your hand stamped! So worth a trip up to 8000ft elevation the views and the Shrine are so impressive and mesmerizing! After go to the zoo part! Wear your walking shoes and not kidding your calves and feet will thank you later. It is a lot of up and downhill! So many animals and several interactions for purchase to feed. Bring cash!! 5 for a double lettuce bundle for giraffes, 1 for a cup for goats. Goats are greedy and they will shove the others to get your food! But they are cute and quite serious about their grub. Giraffes some are very gentle and shy and others that tongue will shock you but it is hilarious to watch and feed! Dont pet them they absolutely dont want to be touched they just want the lettuce! People tried to pet but you can tell by giraffe reactions that upset them, respect them, feed them but dont reach out and pet their faces. Like a dog you never go into the face anyways it sets off alerts and anxieties. The Grizzly bears are fascinating and massive! The moose is chill! The Australia enclosures is amazing because it took me a minute to realize the wallabies are loose they are not caged they are tiny not like you would expect. They are serious and inquisitive about you and will stare into your soul but they will not come near you. They also have a bird house enclosure to feed them nectar sugar stick again another $1 I believe. Again bring cash! 100s of birds mostly canary and cockatoos. Goats, giraffes, lions, bears, birds and moose were my favorite but there is many more. We spent about 90 minutes driving to Shrine of the Sun and hiking up in it. Then about 2.5 hours in zoo. We didnt try any food or visit gift shop but all are there. So cant review on that but typical burger and pizza places near the goats enclosure. Very fun day and so much to see and do! Again buy your tickets online before you go, they are timed entry so dont get in line until 10 mins before your purchased time windows! Trust me we learned this! Fortunately we were only 13 mins early to the 10 min pre time window! Go and make a day of it! They are closed Mondays! FYI. We went on a Sunday, holiday weekend so was very busy! Wear good walking shoes!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with school-age children who can handle a full day of walking on steep mountain terrain. The giraffe feeding experience is the highlight reviewers mention most frequently. Toddler-heavy groups should assess the inclines before visiting. Traffic approaching the entrance can add 20–30 minutes, so factor that into arrival planning.

“This zoo is definitely in my top three of zoos ever visited! The zoo was incredibly interactive and keeping the joy alive with sooo many information features. I loved the hippo scale and the plane over looking the enclosures! It was clean, well thought out (especially for being built on the side of a mountain) and just overall a GREAT experience! We went when it was cold out so a lot of the animals were put away but still accessible which is kind of amazing to! Never experienced that before. All of the enclosures were very well thought out for the types of creatures in them and you can tell they put a lot of effort into the design! The tickets were 27+ per person but the extra amenities like feeding the giraffes (100/10 experience by the way!!!) were great prices and the parking was free. There were server Al places you could get away from the cold strategically placed in the park which was totally needed for little bitties. The views of the town were also stunning. Ok this might just be number one zoo on my list! Hands down a wonderful experience I highly recommend!!!!”

“Great zoo! Might be my favorite zoo I've gone too. A lot of construction right now so it's not at its best but it will only be better afterwards! It's better than the Denver zoo, better enclosures, more natural design and great architecture. As it is in the mountains the weather changes can be more severe so be aware and look at more than just temperature for the day, we came on a day it suddenly got veeery windy. It's technically accesable with ramps, shuttles but it is very steep and can be tiring to push strollers/wheelchairs or if you're not used to walking inclines. The shuttles were also full every time I saw them and do cost $3 per person”

“This place is a must when you are in town. Prices are budget friendly, purchase in advance. The traffic getting to the entrance is a little bit heavy, I think it took me like a half hr to drive all the way to the entrance. But be patient. The place looks well maintained, also the animals. Couldn't do the sky lift because of the time. You have to definitely go feed the giraffes. That was one in a lifetime experience. Bring comfortable shoes, there's a lot of walking, also because it is located in a mountain, you could feel like breathing heavily at times. Loved it, definitely would visit again.”
