Climbmax Rock Climbing Gym
๐ South Tempe, AZ
Indoor climbing gym in Tempe with 30+ ft top-rope walls, two stories of bouldering with 350+ routes, lead climbing, auto belays, and beginner instruction. Priced below competing Phoenix gyms.
I checked out ClimbMax for the first time yesterday with a couple of people and we were beyond impressed with the atmosphere, hospitality from the owner Sean, route setting, pricing, and the community there. I learned to climb in a small town where there was only one climbing gym and since moving to Phoenix Iโve been searching for that friendly atmosphere where strangers chat with each other and become friends and people look out for each other. Sean is very friendly and knowledgeable. He conducted my friendโs top rope lesson. Heโs a fantastic teacher and she was able to pick up the pbus method almost instantly. From what Iโve seen around the valley the majority of gyms have pretty expensive day passes and rentals, sometimes costing around $35. ClimbMax is priced significantly lower which is perfect for someone whoโs just getting into climbing and doesnโt want to break the bank. This is the same for membership prices. At some other gyms youโll easily spend close to $100 for a personal monthly membership while ClimbMaxโs is a much more fair price at $55 which pays for its self in under 3 visits. WOW! When my partner and I have more time on our hands weโre planning on starting up a membership and making this our climbing spot! Thanks Sean, we had a blast! -Ginger Yotz
๐ Family Action Verdict
Best for families ready to try climbing without a large upfront cost. The welcoming community and hands-on instruction from owner Sean make it the lowest-friction entry point for nervous first-timers in the Phoenix area. Experienced climbers appreciate the outdoor-style route setting and frequent rotation.

โCannot recommend this gym enough. 11/10 a hidden gem! I travel often and have visited over 35 climbing gyms in the past year, but this one has easily become one of my favorite. Really enjoyed the unique routes with the outdoor style features and especially loved the super cave. I came to Scottsdale for a bachelorette party and wanted to boulder outdoors but didnโt have time. Iโm so glad I found this gym because it was the next best thing. Sean was super welcoming and truly felt like our home gym for the day. Wish we had a gym like this back home. Will definitely be returning every time Iโm back in Arizona!โ

โMy friend and I have been coming to this gym for several months now. I was really nervous when I first started climbing, but now I find it really fun. The locals from the gym set the different routes and they seem to rotate them frequently, which is a plus (and I won't get tired of doing the same V2s lol). Overall this is the place to get a good workout, learn how to climb, and have fun with friends :)โ

โThis gym is like a second home to me. I have been a member since January and I plan to continue my membership. It is a wonderful community and a safe place to learn and grow. The owner Sean is awesome and you can tell he truly cares about the gym and community. I tell everyone I know to come to climbmax!โ
