Great bird watching place. For beginners the Merlin App will record and identity the calls of the birds. The acorn woodpecker and the nettles woodpecker are there. The acorn woodpeckers have a granary or "storage tree” by the baseball fields. I recommend the books 1) Secrets of the Oak Woodlands: Plants and Animals among California's Oaks by Kate Marianchild (Author), Ann Meyer Maglinte (Illustrator) great illustrations 2) Birding Guide to the Greater Pasadena Area by the Pasadena Audubon Society.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families who want a full park day with varied activities β€” trail walk, playground, skating, and a dog run all in one visit. The oak-shaded trail is particularly useful in summer. Dog owners should keep leashes on outside the designated dog park; enforcement is active and tickets have been issued to visitors who were unaware.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Download the Merlin Bird ID app before visiting β€” acorn woodpeckers are reliably spotted near the baseball fields
⏰Keep dogs leashed outside the designated dog park area; local police actively enforce the ordinance
🎟️The perimeter oak trail is shaded and good for pram-compatible walking on firm paths
πŸš—Separate big and small dog enclosures in the dog park β€” check which gate matches your dog's size

β€œCV park is the most popular area to visit. Kids, family & dogs are perfect suitable to play active everyday. Of course the restroom is clean. The atmosphere is great! I’m getting a lot of exercise everyday walking on the trail. Just awesome. Highly recommend visiting there with your friends and family. (if you have a dog to play with) Cool air. Have fun anyway!”

β€œReally nice park, has an area for skating, a playground, and a nice "trail" that gives you a good walk around the park. Took my dog and she loved it, I loved all the trashcans that made it easy to dispose of her baggies. Lots of shade and spots to lay out a blanket or put down a chair and just enjoy the area. Has a nice basketball court too.”

β€œGreat park with an interesting history (Nazi camp?!?). For dogs, there’s an oak shaded trail that parallels Verdugo Wash, a great place to train for hiking, or on a hot summer day. There’s also a dog park, with big and small dog areas, if you use dog parks. (I don’t recommend any of them, really.)”

Overview

The park's perimeter trail runs under oak canopy alongside Verdugo Wash β€” a practical spot for training hikes on hot days. Playgrounds serve a wide age range, and the skating area and basketball courts add options for older kids. The dog park features separate enclosures for large and small dogs. Acorn woodpeckers maintain a visible granary tree near the baseball fields, making it a reliable birding stop. Leash laws outside the dog park are enforced by local police.
