1 / 2Greenwich Audubon Center
đ Greenwich, NY
Greenwich Audubon Center spans 686 acres across seven sanctuaries in Connecticut, featuring well-maintained trails around a scenic lake suitable for first-time hikers of most ages.
I LOVE Audubon Center! It is so quiet, and you can truly interact with nature. They have so many different trails. The trails are relatively beginner friendly, since they are not too steep, and they don't have weird vines and branches on the ground you can twist your ankles on. I also love listening to the birds there. Unfortunately, they don't allow dogs here, which is sad, but you can bring dogs to Mianus River Park, which is also super nice, which has more difficult trails.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 3 and up who want a calm, accessible first hiking experience. The lake loop is the sweet spot â flat enough for young walkers, varied enough for adults to enjoy. Dogs are not permitted on the property. Stick to the main lake trail on a first visit.

âSuch a nice place for a an afternoon walk. There's no grand adventures or hikes here, but a very friendly mix of some elevation, water, small lakes and walking trails. Be aware that the trails are not highly traveled if you go beyond a lake, so they are sometimes hard to follow. Then again the risk if getting lost into unbounded wilderness is minimal đâ

âBeautiful hike around a lake. Very nice trail doable for most ages, mostly straight path with some rocks in the path but definitely doable for first time hikers. There's a couple other trails besides the one by the lake, there's even an open field great for pictures!â

âI met up with two friends here specifically for the firefly lecture. We hiked some of the trails beforehand to enjoy the flowers and frogs. The fireflies were definitely out in force that night and we had a blast watching their light show!â

Overview
Greenwich Audubon Center covers 686 acres of woodlands, meadows, and wetlands across seven connected sanctuaries. Trails loop around a scenic lake on relatively flat, well-maintained paths with some rocky sections that remain manageable for most ages. Secondary trails beyond the lake are less traveled and can be harder to follow. An open field near the main trail is a popular spot for family photos.
