1 / 3Hangar 18 Indoor Climbing Gym - Long Beach
π Signal Hill, CA
Indoor climbing gym with top-rope, auto belay, and bouldering routes perfect for families new to rock climbing. Known for beginner-friendly instruction and welcoming community atmosphere.
Awesome staff, fun climbs, and great vibes all around make Hangar 18 Long Beach one of the best Hangar 18 gyms by far! I've been bouldering and top roping for years now and I always find myself going to Hangar 18 because they are one of the most affordable climbing gyms in SoCal. Some of the Hangar locations are better than others due to overall maintenance and staff. This location is definitely a lot more well maintained, and is also one of the newest locations. The crash pads are thick and don't look like they are falling apart. There's an even number of top roping and bouldering areas, and the overall layout of the climbing gym is very welcoming. It feels a lot more open and less claustrophobic when there's more people around... My friends and I came to utilize our monthly membership that was ending and I finally convinced them to take a belaying class, since they're the only been doing bouldering. The staff were more than happy to assist us and let us use the rental equipment. They were patient and really helpful in walking us through each step, with adequate time to practice tying the figure 8 knot and appropriate usage of the Grigri top roping device. After top roping for about an hour we did some bouldering and the other members of the gym were so supportive and helpful in helping us through certain routes we were stuck at. Everyone seems to treat each other like family here which is really awesome. If I didn't live so far away I think I'd definitely become a regular here!
π Family Action Verdict
Perfect for families with kids aged 9+ who want to try rock climbing in a supportive environment. The gym excels at beginner instruction and has a genuine community feel where everyone helps each other. Best choice over busier Orange location if you want more space and attention for your kids.

βI've been to the Long Beach Hangar twice now, and the second time around, the routes were super interesting. Each wall offers fairly unique climbs like a lot of gyms try to offer, but I feel Long Beach routesetters know what they're doing. There were a few climbs that offered dynamic approaches to them that were super fun, and you feel cool swinging from one hold to a mid-air hang between two holds. Super stellar stuff. The gym isn't as big as the Orange location, but parking is plenty, and it doesn't get nearly as crowded as Orange either. I came here Saturday morning and never once felt like I had to wait for anyone to climb anything. They do offer top rope and auto belay here, and I'll admit I was rusty on my top rope tech ique, but the front desk staff were super helpful and gave us a refresher. They have a small workout area with a bench and a few weights that nothing to be amazed about as well as a standard campus board and kilter. Honestly, if the Orange location is packed, come check out Long Beach Hangar. You won't be disappointed. Update: May 2024 I've been really enjoying coming here on the weekends. There's still no crowd, parking is always available, staff always friendly, and the routes have gotten more unique since my initial review, in my opinion. They do take a bit of time to reset certain walls but this gives you enough time to work out a project.β

βReally like this hangar 18 versus the one in orange. This location tends to be less crowded during peak times. Itβs bigger, offers bouldering, auto belay and top rope. The staff and vibe are much better in my opinion. This gym is also extremely kid friendly with many kids in the gym climbing. Seems like a community and everyone likes to help everyone vs the orange location where everyone was very indifferent to you being there. My kids ages 13 and 9 love it here. There are many beginner routes and enough to challenge more experienced climbers. I would highly recommend this location if you have kids.β

βthis is our first time going to this location here in LongBeachπ». I have previously been to the location in Hawthorne, but this is the first time taking my kids. They enjoyed the auto ballet system. We did not try to do the bouldering, but the first time you come here you need to do a basic safety instruction class, which doesn't take very longstaff. Here is very friendly and helpful. Location is in a great spot. Have fun and enjoy yourself.β
