1 / 2Hangar 18 Indoor Climbing Gym - Upland
π Upland, CA
Indoor climbing gym in a real aircraft hangar in Upland with 12,000+ sq ft of terrain, 100+ bouldering problems, top-rope and lead climbing up to 30+ ft, auto belays, and a youth wall.
This is the original Hangar 18 climbing gym. It's really in an old hangar! Good bouldering problems, great top rope and lead climbing routes, and down to earth cool crowd and staff. I think the routes here are probably some of the more difficult ones among several of the climbing gyms in Southern California. Besides the bouldering and rope climbing areas, there aren't too many other extra facilities compared to other climbing gyms (like weights, workout machines, saunas, etc.). The focus is really on the walls. Other than several fans, there's no air conditioning or central heat, so temperatures may be really hot in summer and cold in winter. Still one if my favorite climbing gyms because of the routes and the chill crowd. If you want to lead climb, you need to bring your own rope as they don't lend out ropes anymore. They do offer lead climbing classes/certification.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with teens or kids who already have climbing experience and want challenging, outdoor-style routes in an unusual setting. Beginners face a steeper learning curve here than at purpose-built gyms β staff guidance for newcomers has been called out as inconsistent in reviews.

βI think this is like only my 3rd review ever. First time ever coming to a hangar 18 so figured we would just walk in. When we got there a nice young lady greeted us. She let us know that all classes and reservations were full. Most people would have stopped there and we would have left without ever trying it. But she continued to ask questions and when we told her what we were looking for she recommended we try the rancho location. She helped us do the waivers there so when we got to rancho we could be ready. We went to rancho and thanks to her going the extra mile you were able to gain 2 new members. Didn't catch her name but she was a young girl with a nose ring Sunday morning February 22nd.β

βThis is an okay gym overall. Thereβs not as much bouldering as Iβd like and I wish they would allow people to boulder up to a marked line on some of the top-rope walls, like many other small gyms do. I also had to take a star off because one woman who regularly works the front desk is consistently rude and condescending. Itβs disappointing, because the rest of the staff are friendly and great, but she shouldnβt be in a customer-facing role if her behavior makes visitors feel unwelcome.β

Overview
Hangar 18 Upland is housed in an original aircraft hangar, giving it ceiling height and square footage most climbing gyms lack. Over 100 bouldering problems span two levels, plus top-rope lines, lead routes including a 30-ft lead roof, and auto belays for solo climbing. Route setters use outdoor-style features. Classes, yoga, birthday parties, and a youth wall round out the offering. No climate control β temperatures track with outdoor conditions.
