1 / 2Holtsville Wildlife & Ecology Center
π Holtsville, NY
Free outdoor wildlife center on Long Island housing a diverse mix of exotic and barnyard animals including lynx, wolf-dogs, foxes, and a black bear. Features hiking trails, a playground, bike paths, and pram-friendly access throughout.
We love visiting the Holtsville Ecology Center and often use it as part of our homeschool experience. Being September, we did not utilize the pool area. We ride bikes as a family often on the long exercise path. The indoor plant area is wonderful for seeing so many different types of plant life up close, and the wide variety of animals always makes it a fun and educational trip. The staff are very knowledgeable and clearly care for the animals. The playground is nice with plenty of seating for parents, and the covered picnic tables are a huge plusβwe love having picnics there while the kids play nearby and burn off energy. The grounds are also very clean, which we really appreciate. The one downside is the bathrooms near the playground. They are consistently unpleasant, and since most kids need to use the restroom while playing, itβs inconvenient to have to walk all the way back by the animal area to find a better bathroom. Overall, itβs a fantastic place for families, especially for those who enjoy learning and spending time outdoors, but I do hope the bathroom situation by the playground improves.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children of all ages who want an educational outdoor experience at no cost. The close-viewing enclosures make animals genuinely accessible rather than distant, and the combination of wildlife, hiking, and cycling suits families who want a half-day outing. Homeschool families return regularly for the ecology programming.

βThis was orchestrated quite well. Plenty of parking and easy access to the main entrance. Check in process is best if you prepay for tickets. Don't waste time waiting in line to buy tickets in person. The display is tasteful and great variety with different rooms. Outdoor decorations were nice as you exit or take outdoor pictures. Money from pictures which is optional helps support the animals onsite.β

βNice small zoo to visit, animals look well-cared for. I actually like that you can see animals close enough. Highlight of the visit was black bearβs enclosure (wanted to check him out again since he was quite funny and friendly few years ago in my 1st visit). Donation is quite appreciated as this is not some typical zoo, but one caring for some disabled animals.β

βSuch a great place! Free, but you can give a donation. The animals were so incredible. A mix between exotic and barnyard. Fun for kids and adults. Lots of parking and there's also a playground and hiking trails. Go check it all out. You won't regret it . πππΊππ¦ππππ’π¦β

Overview
Holtsville Wildlife & Ecology Center is a Suffolk County facility where families can view animals at close rangeβlynx, wolf-dogs, goats, foxes, and a notably sociable black bear among them. An indoor plant conservatory, hiking trails, long bike exercise path, and a playground extend the visit well beyond the animal exhibits. Donations are welcomed and directly support animal care. Pram-friendly paths run throughout the grounds.
