Beautiful historical mansion right in the middle of Jamaica, Queens. Beautiful grounds are an oasis of calm in a busy neighborhood. This was the home of Rufus King (1755-1827), a Founding Father and US Senator. He was the presidential nominee for the Federalist Party in 1816, in which he was defeated by James Monroe. Rufus King was a prominent opponent of slavery, even though he was a slaveholder as a young man. His son John Alsop King (1788-1867) also lived at the mansion. He was governor of New York from 1857 to 1858. Our tour guide today was great and very knowledgeable.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best suited for families with school-age children or teens interested in American history and guided educational experiences. The hourly guided tours and historical focus make this ideal for patient kids who enjoy learning about the past. Not recommended for families seeking hands-on activities or very young children who may struggle with the tour format.

β€œSurprisingly well preserved and beautifully curated museum. There are lots of pieces donated directly from the descendants of the family. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of details bout individual rooms and the Kings family. There were no other visitors, so we had as long as we wanted to look around and take pictures.”

β€œInteresting place to visit and learn about history. Went on a weekday, the tours run every hour on the hour - I'm not sure if it was possible to walk through the house without the tour, the guide was very informative and definitely enhanced the experience.”
