1 / 2Kovler Lion House and Pepper Family Wildlife Center
📍 Lincoln Park, IL
The Kovler Lion House at Lincoln Park Zoo features modern, spacious lion enclosures with large observation windows. Free admission, pram-friendly, cafe on-site. Part of a broader free zoo visit in Chicago's lakefront parkland.
Beautiful facility and really incentive exhibits. The lions looked very happy
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with kids of any age who want a close-up big cat encounter in a free, accessible setting. The renovated enclosures are genuinely impressive compared to previous generations of zoo design. Visit during morning hours when the cubs tend to be more active — adult lions favour afternoon naps.

“Today was our first visit back since CV19 and the remodel - wow, what a difference! I used to live across the street from LP Zoo and we loved listening to the big cats at night but their enclosure (which seemed fine at the time) was *so* much smaller than the upgrade! There's much more space for the cats to move around when they want and there are huge observation windows, too!”

“The Lion House is always a stop while visiting the Lincoln Park Zoo. I have been coming to the zoo since I was a little kid and that's a number of decades. The building design has changed a lot over the years. Today Jabari and the ladies were napping, while the 18 month old cubs chilled on the other side of the exhibit.”

Overview
Extensively renovated, the Lion House now gives African lions — including cubs around 18 months old — significantly more space than the original structure. Floor-to-ceiling observation windows allow close-range viewing. Lincoln Park Zoo surrounds the building with additional free exhibits, cafe facilities, and accessible paths. The zoo also hosts a popular winter lights display.
