1 / 3Oaks Park Roller Rink
đ Southeast Portland, OR
Oaks Park Roller Rink in Portland is a historic landmark open six days a week for public skate sessions, with rental skates, a skate shop, birthday party packages, and an adjacent amusement ride area including Chipper's Preschool Rides for young
So, I went to the Oaks Park Roller Rink for the first time today. Here is all the good stuff. It is convenient to get to, it's not too expensive, the floors are done traditionally and it is classic!! I mean really, really classic. As soon as you walk in you feel transported back to an older era. They even have a traditional organ player! I didn't try any of the food but I didn't hear anyone complaining. There is a beginners area, a not so beginner area, a fun humped runner and the traditional rink. There was only a couple of minor things that I noted as not amazing. First off, there are signs everywhere saying that they are cashless, then you have to pay two quarters for a locker. That one took me a minute ( I just left my stuff in the ground in a neat bundle and it was fine, no thieves). The other note is there is at least one rule I didn't see displayed. You aren't allowed to wear a hat unless you have a hat clip. You can buy them there ( not sure how much they are) and the rule makes sense in light of how a fallen hat could cause someone to go ass over tea kettle if it fell into someone's skates. Finally, the skates I rented had no padding on the bottom. I literally felt like I was skating on a hard piece of metal. However understand that they probably cycle a lot of people through those skates and I can guarantee my rather large frame caused most of my pain. Other than those things, it was an amazing experience. I WILL be going back and I'm going to bring my family and friends. I can't recommend this place enough.
đ Family Action Verdict
Strong pick for families with school-age children and teens who want a classic, high-energy skating experience. The adjacent Chipper's Preschool Rides section extends the outing for families with toddlers. Beginners benefit from available classes.
