Renovated playground at Sixth Ave and Spruce St in Hillcrest featuring modern multi-age structures, a popular spinning bowl, and clean restrooms on-site. Shade is sparse except late afternoon.

My daughters and I went here just for a quick play and they loved it specially that spinning bowl or whatever you may call it. I'm pretty surprised that the restrooms are clean but the cubicle doesn't have light inside. I have to use my phone light because my daughter doesn't wanna go inside.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Works best for families with kids ages 3–10 who want a quick urban play stop in Hillcrest. Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid direct sun exposure on the largely unshaded equipment. The spinning bowl is a particular draw for energetic kids.

â„šī¸ What to Know Before You Go

💡Visit in the morning or late afternoon — minimal shade makes midday visits uncomfortable in warm months
⏰Bring a phone torch if your child needs to use the restroom cubicle, which has no interior light
đŸŽŸī¸Street parking on Sixth Ave or Spruce St is the main option; it fills quickly near the park

“Newer equipment, decent mix of age level appropriate designs. Very little shade, except perhaps in the late afternoon. Homeless population is definitely wandering around but so are lots of regular folks so it feels safe even if not ideal.”

Overview

Sixth Avenue Playground sits at the corner of Sixth Ave and Spruce Street in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood. The equipment is newer, with a range of age-appropriate designs including a spinning bowl that draws repeated praise from young visitors. Restrooms on-site are maintained, and the cubicle lacks interior lighting — a phone torch helps. Shade is minimal during midday, so morning or late-afternoon visits are more comfortable. The surrounding area sees a mix of regular neighborhood users.
