1 / 3The Getty Villa
π Pacific Palisades, CA
Free-admission museum housing ancient Greek and Roman collections inside a meticulously recreated Roman country villa overlooking the Pacific Coast. Timed-entry reservations required. Parking has a fee. All ages.
I visited the Getty Villa today with my wife and two sons (ages 20 and 17) to celebrate my youngestβs 17th birthday. As someone who truly loves art history, this was his top request, and it was the perfect choice. **I won't post any art but just some pictures of the outer area.** From an art history perspective, the collection is unparalleled. Being surrounded by such a vast and meticulously curated selection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities is an education in itself. Seeing the artifacts housed in a building modeled after the Villa dei Papiri makes the history feel aliveβitβs not just a museum, itβs an immersive experience into the ancient world. The architecture is equally matched by the incredible views. Nestled in the hills of Pacific Palisades, the sight of the Pacific Ocean framed by the villaβs classical columns and lush Mediterranean gardens is breathtaking. The Outer Peristyle, with its long reflecting pool and views out toward the coast, provided some of the best photo opportunities of our trip. Whether youβre a serious student of history like my son or just someone looking for one of the most beautiful vistas in Los Angeles, this is a must-visit. A truly sophisticated and memorable way to celebrate a milestone birthday!
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with older children and teens who connect with ancient history and architecture. The Roman villa setting makes the collections tangible β stone archways, courtyard fountains, and ocean views create a backdrop that history-minded kids remember. Younger children enjoy the gardens and architecture when the artifacts don't fully land.

βI visited the Getty Villa after the Getty Museum, and it turned out to be an additional and unexpected surprise. The location is enchanting, overlooking the coast, and during the week it feels quite relaxed and easy to enjoy without overwhelming crowds. The Villa recreates, in its own way, a Roman villa, specifically inspired by the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. For an Italian visitor it might feel a bit kitsch at first, but once you let go of comparisons, the experience can actually be memorable. The audio guide is available in several languages, including Italian, which adds real value to the visit. Beyond the art collection, the Villa is surrounded by beautifully gardens and even features an amphitheater, making the atmosphere immersive and unique. Absolutely worth seeing. Free admission, with paid parking.β

βVisiting the museum this past weekend was an awesome experience. The collection pieces are amazing. I cought myself gazing at the structure of the doors, ceiling mouldings, and the underside of the stairway to the second floor as well. Much thought was put into not only the details of the art pieces, but also the structure itself. The view from the second floor balcony out towards the ocean is beautiful. The museum grounds are very clean and the staff is nice. There are restrooms in various locations. There are stairs, elevators and ramps available. There is a gift shop with many items to choose from. There is a $25 fee for parking.β

βThis has always been a favorite place to visit for me. Haven't been here in a while.... And terrified for it during the Palasades fires. Thank goodness it remained safe. Tickets are free, just reserve your entry time. Parking structure spacious, does have a charge. Gorgeous grounds, beautiful gardens. Stunning buildings..... I've been in Pompeii, and this place feels like a time machine to another era. While the museum is busy , it never feels crowded. There is an on site cafeteria and a coffee kiosk, with lots of tables and seating. This should be on your must do list!β
