1 / 2The Gravity Vault - Montclair, NJ
📍 Montclair, NY
12,000 sq ft bouldering facility in Montclair with 120+ routes up to 16 feet, LED competition walls, beginner classes, kids programs, and birthday parties. Ages 5–6 climb with staff supervision; ages 7–13 require an adult.
This is a great rock climbing gym. Everyone is very friendly there. One of the workers (Julia) patiently helped me to pick out the shoes that I would need when I decided to purchase my own instead of renting. She gave me great advice when it came to the best type of shoe for beginners, chalk, and bag to buy. There are plenty of problems to climb at this gym. If you're a beginner, you have plenty of safe, fun options when it comes to climbing (VB, V0, V1) There is a small gym with equipment that you can use to warm up before climbing or to just get in a workout ( It has a treadmill, elliptical machine, mats, kettle bells, bosu ball, pull-up bar, etc). The people who work there clean everything thoroughly. The bathrooms are never dirty. Your day pass can be used throughout the same day it is purchased, and you have access to the classes offered that day. Shoe rentals are only $5 and renting a chalk bag will only cost you $3.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with tweens or teens who want a structured introduction to bouldering. Patient staff and a wide route range from beginner to advanced make first visits comfortable. Confirm before arriving that it is bouldering-only — there is no rope climbing here. Route setting rotates regularly, giving returning visitors fresh challenges.

“First thing to say is this gym is ONLY BOULDERING. Just make sure you know this beforehand so you aren’t disappointed and bring a harness to the gym. But when you are aware that it is an only bouldering gym, you realize it’s really good for what it does. There’s a really cool comp wall, a 45 degree overhang, an arch section, slab, and everything in between. Overall a great gym that I’d love to come to again.”

“I went here for my first time ever climbing and it was a really good experience. The staff and all the members are super nice. The gym is also very well maintained and they are constantly changing the walls. Definitely recommend!”

“Inept upper management. Some employees are very bad. Keep away from the employees, many are extremely sensitive and will attempt to cancel your membership if you say something that is not woke. They put their personal beliefs and philosophy into their business, and this results in unfair treatment. Just don’t go rock climbing. Do something else, there are other fun activities. Yoga, martial arts, bowling, see a movie, basketball, tennis—there’s a bunch. This place does not deserve your money, an employee with face tattoos told me he doesn’t like Jews and put his hands on me yet I have my membership canceled for misgendering someone and telling a climber that her boobs might make it harder to do a specific move. One is hateful and the other is not. This is a great place in terms of the management of it all. Very PC. Just let us climb. Don’t make it political. Simply put though, they were racist towards me and pushed me and none of the mangers not higher-up managers in gravity vault corporate take it seriously or care even. Crazy. 1/10.”
