Free admission is available on the first Thursday of every month at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, but tickets must be reserved in advance on the third Thursday of the previous month — planning ahead is definitely worth it. The gardens are absolutely stunning. Right now, magnolias, camellias, and cherry blossoms are in bloom, but this place is beautiful in every season. Our visit lasted about 2.5 hours — we enjoyed a long walk and also took the shuttle, capturing lots of beautiful photos and videos along the way. The property features incredible themed gardens, including a Chinese Garden, a Japanese Garden, and a breathtaking Desert Garden filled with cacti of all shapes and sizes — some taller than a person, some fuzzy, and even blooming. There are also peaceful ponds with water lilies, and visitors can even book a traditional tea ceremony. On-site amenities include a café and a gift shop. You can pick up a map at the entrance or scan a QR code to download a digital guide and audio tour. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. This is truly a place you’ll want to return to again and again — and we definitely will.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families who commit to a full-day visit — the gardens alone take two-plus hours to walk properly, and adding the art museum extends that further. The Chinese garden is a genuine standout that surprises most first-time visitors. Older children who can self-navigate the grounds freely get the most from it.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Reserve free first-Thursday tickets on the third Thursday of the previous month — they fill fast
Pick up or scan a garden map at the entrance — the grounds are large and easy to get turned around in
🎟️The Chinese garden section is often cited as the most surprising highlight — save energy for it
🚗Shuttle service connects remote garden sections if walking fatigue sets in

Went for a 12:30p Rose Garden Tea House lunch on Thursday to celebrate my birthday with friends. Found parking right away. Everyone was SO FRIENDLY from the security guards in front, women in the ticket office, to the helpful guides along the path. I want to especially thank AVA at the ticket office for being so informative and such a joy to talk to. You made my day! The Tea House has knowledgeable and attentive staff which felt so wonderful as a group with different diets and food allergies. We felt really taken care of. As a photographer I appreciated they’ve worked in a group photo for all tables once the beautiful trays are all presented. There was some rain that cleared to warm sunny skies which made the whole exploration after lunch more magical. Don’t forget to check out the indoor plant conservatory and the 10/10 gift shop!! Even more warm & helpful people working there.

Five star beauty in the gardens alone. We plan to return for tea and museums next month. Driving there was easy with navigation and parking was a breeze. A simple check-in with the entrance attendant (we had prepaid tickets) and physical check-in at reception for entry. There is a gift store on-site with many lovely and different types of items to select from (from socks, to plants and so much more) for purchase. We went during Christmas so the tree and ornaments were beautifully decorated. We read a lot, spent time in the rose garden, took breathtaking photos and had lunch on the premises (palatable). I would definitely consider becoming a member. The weather was perfect and we can't wait to go back 😍

Amazing. Yes plan the better part of a day or become an annual member as there is a lot to see. From rainforest to jungle to desert to woodland along with Japanese and Chinese gardens this is truly a treasure. Parking lot jammed but not impossible to find a spot. See a little or see a lot take a stroll this place is worth a visit.
