1 / 3The River Oaks Theatre
π Hyde Park, TX
Historic 1939 cinema with diverse programming spanning current releases, documentaries, foreign films, and classics. Quality cafe dining, glamorous retro interiors, and a Cinema Savant subscription for regulars.
This is the coolest theater I've seen in the area. It kept a lot of it's original character with modern commodity. I felt super comfortable and the food was super fresh and delicious. If you are looking for a good date location, this is definitely it!
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with teens and older children who want cinema as a genuine cultural experience rather than a multiplex trip. The curated programming skews away from mainstream blockbusters, so check listings before you go. Cafe dining and the historic atmosphere reward families who treat movie night as a special occasion.

βI LOVEβ€οΈ The River Oaks Theatre. They screen an impressively wide range of film genres: current releases, documentary, foreign, art house, old classicsβ¦plus live events, film fests-you name it! I stopped going to movies during Covid like everyone, but was never enthralled with the generic cinema chains even before that. This is different and itβs special to have the shared communal experience of seeing films out in a beautiful theatre. You just donβt get that with Netflix. The seats are comfortable, the staff is lovely. Iβve only had REALLY good popcorn and a beer so far but the food looks great. (FYI 18% auto-gratuity will be added to your bill, which saves you having to look at it the dark! Iβm happy to pay it to support their staff and also to not have to get up- you can fully relax and be immersed!) Becoming a Cinema Savant subscriber makes seeing lots of amazing films possible for $25 a month. DO. IT. Please support this gem of Houston. Not just a movie theater, itβs a multipurpose center for the community and the arts in Houston. Check out the calendar of events! π (NOTE TO MANAGEMENT/ CITY OF HOUSTON: a crosswalk is desperately needed for those attempting to cross W Gray St. from the garage. Itβs a safety hazard. TY)β

βOur third time visiting the iconic River Oaks Theater! There is no other cinema experience like it in Houston! Truly a one of kind! Historic and legendary! Glamorous and the way a movie going experience should be! The staff is outstanding. The renovations are impeccable. The food is top tier. The film curator has done an outstanding job showcasing some of the best films from arthouse, indie, mainstream, oldschool, cult classics, something for literally everyone! No way I was missing this opportunity to meet Shannon Sossamon after a screening of A Knight's Tale! I was so impressed with the amount of time we were able to spend with her! She was so sweet and it was the most intimate Meet & Greet I've ever been a part of! An unforgettable night! I wish I could attend every day! The selection of films is the most diverse and eclectic in all of Houston! A cinephile's heaven!β

βWe came for a matinee on Saturday afternoon after having a pretty bad experience at another theater in town. Purchasing tickets online was easy. The pay to park situation over there is kind of a bummer but it does make it easier to find a parking spot. The seats were pretty comfortable but would be much better if they reclined. We didnβt order food or drinks so I canβt speak to that but I did notice that they serve their popcorn in reusable metal buckets which I like. I know that this is an art house theater but I do wish they played more of the current films because this would for sure be my movie theater of choice.β
