1 / 2Dunlavy Park
📍 Montrose, TX
Free outdoor park in Houston featuring a shaded playground and splash pad — two key assets during the city's long hot season. Toddler-friendly with pram access. Street parking only, with sparse spots available.
This is a great place for kids. The playground has lots of shade and there’s a nice splash pad. You do have to call the city periodically to get them to clean blocked drainage, either on the splash pad or the concrete-curb-ringed area around the playground. It’s also a great venue for a child’s birthday party, especially if you combine it with a tour of the nearby firehouse.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A dependable free park for Houston families with toddlers and young children who need outdoor play during the city's hottest months. The shade and splash pad together solve the main barrier to outdoor visits in summer. The nearby firehouse creates an optional educational stop for birthday groups.

“The water feels amazing in this heat. You might get weird looks as an adult playing in the fountain, but it’s too hot for judgement.”

Overview
Dunlavy Park pairs a well-shaded playground with a splash pad, giving families a practical two-zone option during Houston's hot months. The park is dog-friendly and sits two blocks from a residential area, giving it a neighborhood feel. One reviewer notes periodic drainage blockages on the splash pad or surrounding concrete that require a city maintenance call to resolve. Street parking is the only option and space is sparse.
