I took my Brother and Sister-in-law to visit the B & O Railroad Museum because he is a narrow gauge train fanatic. We went on a Wednesday and got 10% off and we had a blast. There had been some youth groups earlier in the day, but we ended up having the place to ourselves. Right in the middle of where the trains would switch out, stood a huge Christmas tree with space under it for kids to play. All around in a circle stood old engines dating back to the birth of the railroad. Some had ramps up to them to easily see the inside of the engine. There were also stagecoaches, both individual and two-level touring coaches. I found it amazing that anyone would travel any lengthy distance in one of those. The Museum featured a Candy Cane Cafe, which was unfortunately closed that day. A wonderful horn player was playing all of the great Christmas songs, and he even took our request for 'O Holy Night'. There were games for children of all ages and so we all made a keepsake ornament marking our visit. Last but not least, we went to the museum gift shop. It was chock full of goodies. We bought my husband a Lionel Train T-shirt, and I got a gingerbread-style train ornament, and my brother bought my husband a year's membership to the Museum. A grand time was had by all.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children who have expressed any interest in trains — the scale and authenticity of the collection converts casual curiosity into genuine enthusiasm. The roundhouse itself is architecturally impressive regardless of rail interest.

“This museum has an amazing array of trains. They were displayed well in an organized logical fashion in the beautiful round house. There was a very interesting variety of trains outside in the yard and in the maintenance building. The explanations were concise and comprehensive. It was fun to be able to go into some of the trains. The model train sets, history of the underground, and play areas for kids make this an amazing display of the history of trains. I very highly recommend this museum for anyone, train buff or not.”

“Awesome museum about early railroad history featuring the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Great, currated collection of early steam locos and passenger cars. Easy, self-guided tour. Tour guides available if you prefer. The trains were awsome and interractive. There are tons of detailed scale models and two operating model railroads. The hidden gem is all the social history (especially of the African-American struggle) that is highlighted throughout the musem.”

“Great museum. The roundhouse is a perfect place for displaying trains. Not an overwhelming amount of historical displays, but most were (understandablely) focused on the B&O railroad that highlight the train history of Maryland. Be sure to go outside and check out the other building as well!”
