BIG Heart Ranch
📍 Western Malibu, CA
A working rescued animal sanctuary off Pacific Coast Highway home to 50-plus animals including horses, donkeys, alpacas, goats, pigs, and ducks. Appointment-based visits with ocean and mountain views.
We live in New York City, and this summer we decided to take our family to experience Los Angeles. Having our nieces with us, ages 4 and 7, we had to choose activities that both can attend and enjoy, which most of the time can be a challenging task. They both love horses, ranches and horse back-riding, but to our surprise we couldn’t find a horse ranch to accept both of them, because of the age. One of my dear friends recommended us to check out Big Heart Ranch. We didn’t make an appointment, as it was too late, so we decided to show up, and go from there. We had the most incredible and heartwarming experience. We were greeted by Nora, and even though we didn’t have an appointment she welcomed us with open arms. You might think that only the girls were excited to see the ranch, but the adults were even more excited to experience the lovely ranch with a Pacific Ocean view. While touring the ranch, we’ve learn a lot about the rescued animals ,but also the incredible work they do with kids. Both the kids and adults were in need of this experience at the ranch with Nora. The interaction with the animals at the ranch was incredible, the care that Nora showed for the girls was moving, the lessons she taught both the kids and adults was beyond what we could ever expect. Forever grateful for Nora and the love and connection she had with the girls, we are looking forward to bringing them back soon. If you live in Los Angeles or just visit, Big Heart Ranch is something that we really recommend. The experience will offer you so much more than you expect.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children of any age who want meaningful animal interaction rather than a conventional zoo experience. The hands-on, facilitated encounters create genuine connection with rescued animals. Advance booking is required — walk-ins are not accepted. The PCH location and ocean backdrop make the visit feel distinctly Malibu.

“I had the most incredible experience at Big Heart Ranch in Malibu, where I participated in equine therapy and formed a deep connection with a beautiful horse named Kona. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the peaceful, healing energy of the ranch. The staff was warm, compassionate, and truly dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for both people and animals. Working with Kona was life-changing. He had such a gentle yet powerful presence, and through our interactions, I felt a sense of grounding, emotional clarity, and connection unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The therapists and facilitators at Big Heart Ranch skillfully guided me through the process, helping me tap into emotions and insights in a way that felt natural and deeply healing. The ranch itself is stunning, surrounded by nature, making it the perfect place for reflection and personal growth. Whether you’re looking for emotional healing, personal development, or simply a place to reconnect with yourself, Big Heart Ranch is a truly magical and transformative space. I will forever be grateful for my time there and my bond with Kona, and I highly recommend this incredible sanctuary to anyone seeking a profound healing experience.”

“I found these guys on Airb&b under the category of adventures, and my what an adventure it was. We spent the afternoon with pigs, goats, donkeys and mini ponies. I was so sad to get home to discover I was having so much fun I forgot to take as many photos as I intended, and when you have so much fun you forget your cellphone you know you are having a great time. Thank you so much for opening up Big Heart Ranch to the community”
