1 / 3Discovery Playground
đ Manhattan, NY
Secluded Hudson River playground at 158th Street featuring zip lines, water sprayers, a large sandbox, and slides set among mature trees. Free entry, rarely crowded, no on-site facilities.
One NYC's best playgrounds. Partial shade, sprinklers, zip lines, and never crowded. It can be a trek to get here, but well worth it!
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for adventurous families with kids aged 5 and up who value a rare uncrowded playground experience and can manage the access trek. The zip lines and sprinklers are genuinely distinctive for a free city playground. Zip lines have been reported broken on some visits â worth checking current condition before making it the primary destination.

âGreat playground! On the Hudson near 158 street. This playground is large with a lot of unique water features sprayers, large sandbox, cool looking little slides for kids, secluded inside many large trees with plenty of shade. The playground is next to a few soccer fields. There is also picnic tables nearby and you can also Grill for BBQ. If you are not familiar with the area it can be a little difficult to find, best way is to walk on 158 street towards West side Highway, walk down ramp or stairs near basketball court under road then walk north about 100 yards.â

âThe playground itself is fantastic. There is a mini zipline that the kids love, a spiderweb, sandbox and sprinklers. Plenty of shade and the beautiful view of the river and the gw bridge. The only drawbacks are the long walk to he park and no toilets but other than that it's perfect. In the park along the river there are grilling stations and volleyball courts, basket ball courts and biking trails. Everything you could want in a park.â

âThe park has alot of potential. I love that it's never crowded during the week days. However I dont like that on early mornings I have seen several dog owners close the gate and have their dogs running around the park peeing everywhere. I have had to literally wait outside of the park, for the dog owners to put their pets on a leash, get their belongings and leave. During those times, I dont enter the park because the owners let their dogs run around the park freely without their leashes. Take your dogs to a dog park! I have seen several dogs in the sand area that is intended for children and not pets. In the summer, the sprinklers are barely on. Ive gone several times within the last 3 years and its only been on twice, out of the several times we have gone. The wooden play area needs a renovation. Theres a few steps missing and it looks like its falling apart. Also, The park does not have a bathroom.â

Overview
Discovery Playground sits along the Hudson near 158th Street, tucked inside mature trees with river and George Washington Bridge views. Standout features include a mini zip line, spiderweb climber, sandbox, and summer sprinklers. The approach requires navigating to the West Side Highway ramp near the basketball court, then walking north roughly 100 yards. No bathrooms, no food vendors, no parking adjacent â plan accordingly. Weekday mornings can see unleashed dogs before the crowds arrive.
