1 / 3First Ascent Humboldt Park
π West Town, IL
First Ascent Humboldt Park offers indoor bouldering across three full alleys with routes from beginner to advanced. Part of a five-location network with late weekday hours, rotating routes, and free monthly member events.
Really fun bouldering gym β easily one of the best Iβve been to. The route setting is fantastic, with a ton of variety and plenty of technical problems that push you to focus on footwork, tension, and balance rather than just brute upper-body strength. The grades definitely lean on the tougher side, but itβs clear the setters know what theyβre doing, and the climbs are both challenging and rewarding. Beyond the walls, the gym has everything youβd want for training: a moon board, campus rungs, a scatter board, and a well-equipped workout area to round out your session. The space itself feels fresh and modern, and the staff are super friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall positive vibe. A great spot for both serious climbers and those looking to level up their skills.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with kids aged 8 and up who want a physically demanding activity that builds real skill. The gym welcomes first-timers with proper orientation and varied difficulty levels, so the whole family can climb at their own grade.

βFirst time coming to this gym location for First Ascent and was really impressed ! To start, there is not an official parking lot but a good amount of street parking in the area. Attached a picture on the front door on good places to park. The gym is very large, as there is 3 full alleys of bouldering and a small gym on the side. the locker rooms are large and there are plenty of free lockers to put your stuff in (they have padlocks on them). there is a wide range of beginner - intermediate and advanced climbs. the staff is friendly and helpful. the community at these gyms are welcoming, as i found it easy to talk to strangers about different routes and encourage eachother. the prices are fair and pretty standard. overall, a well rounded gym and will be coming back !β

βClimbing again after some time. Getting acquainted with gym climbing has been good. Way different than outdoors, which is all Iβd ever done previously. The nutty comp problems particularly! FA gyms are clean and friendly, been to HP, Avondale & block 37. Varied selection of difficulty and straightforward enough to get back into the vertical vibe. Seems like itβs probably a good community of climbers but itβs usually pretty sparse when I go..β

βI feel like there's a lot of value in the membership β 5 locations and all open late on week days, new routes going up all the time, free member events throughout the month. People are generally really friendly and supportive. I've met some great friends while climbing at these gyms. I'm happy I pulled the trigger and got the membershipβ
