1 / 3Landmark's Nuart Theatre
π Sawtelle, CA
Single-screen West LA art house theater specializing in independent films, foreign language cinema, restored classics with 35mm projection, weekly Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings, and regular filmmaker Q&A sessions. Beer and wine served.
In the bustling heart of West LA, tucked away on Santa Monica Blvd., the Nuart Theater stands as a cinematic haven with a charming facade that sends me back to the bygone era of classic cinema. Its exterior, adorned with vintage marquee lights, beckons travelers to step into a world where time slows down. Entering through the doors, the aroma of freshly popped popcorn envelops you, setting the tone for a night of cinematic delight. The staff, exuding warmth and friendliness, make you feel like a regular from the moment you walk in. We grabbed some popcorn, drinks, and a pack of jujubes and were off. Inside, the Nuart Theater surprises with its quiet intimacy. The hushed atmosphere adds to the allure, transporting you to a place where the magic of film takes center stage. We were among a handful of patrons, creating an almost private screening experience in the massive auditorium. Our chosen film, 'Society of the Snow,' unfolded on the large silver screen with captivating brilliance, earning a solid 10/10. Post-film, we took it upon ourselves to tidy up what little mess we made, a small gesture of appreciation for the staff. We parked just behind the theater on a residential street, and while I felt relatively safe during the late night walk, I can understand a small group of individuals having their reservations, but there was also parking on Sawtelle, which is a more brightly lit and busier street. Overall, the Nuart Theater is a cinematic gem that goes beyond screening movies; it crafts an immersive journey, leaving you overwhelmingly pleased with this hidden treasure of West LA.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with older teens who have an interest in film beyond mainstream multiplexes. The Rocky Horror weekly and director Q&As create experiences unavailable anywhere else in LA.

βHad a great time watching "Misericordia" here followed by a Q&A with writer/director Alain Guiraudie. Beautiful, vintage marquee out front. Nice selection of theater-level food & snacks (including a vegetarian impossible bratwurst). Wine and draft beer are also available. Staff are terrific. The seats were large and comfortable and semi-reclined. The one screen in the theater is suitably large, wide and bright. Plenty of street parking in the surrounding blocks & an assortment of nearby restaurants and cafes if you want to get something before or after your show. All in all, a great theater and cultural asset where you can catch more esoteric indie film fare. Highly recommend.β

βThis is my favorite theater in LA. Known for itβs weekly Rocky Horror showing, this theater also offers a unique selection of films typically not found in more commercial theaters. I especially enjoy their Cine Insomnia series, where they show an assortment of films ranging from anime to cult classics during later hours. Overall a unique theater and experience I highly recommended!β

βGreat place to see rare and weird movies that you wonβt see anywhere else. Theyβve recently had David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch months. Great Rocky Horror Picture Show showings by Sins Oβ the Flesh shadow cast! Also, shares a wall with Cinefile Video where the rent physical media and specialize in cult film. ALL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!β
