1 / 3Lomita Railroad Museum
đ Lomita, CA
Free Lomita railroad museum with a Southern Pacific steam locomotive, Union Pacific caboose, and historic tank and box cars. Knowledgeable staff, a unique caboose library, and a grassy picnic area across the street.
Such a fun field trip for our homeschool crew. We went on a friday morning. The workers are so fun and so knowledgeable. You can feel the love the young workers have for their job and trains. Oh and can not forget about the adorable library in the caboose where you can sit and read all sorts of train books. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch on the lawn across the street.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for families with train-loving children who want a relaxed, unhurried visit at no cost. The intimate size suits younger children who might be overwhelmed at larger museums. Richard's hands-on guidance lifts the experience well above what a self-guided visit would deliver. Pack a picnic and plan for a genuinely unhurried afternoon.

âSmall museum about the history of the railroad and trains in the area. Richard, the curator/guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fun! Don't miss the "Lantern Training School." It's both educational and engaging. There is a wide grassy area you can run around in or picnic and an additional exhibit across the street.â

Overview
Lomita Railroad Museum displays Southern Pacific and Union Pacific rolling stock including a 1910 caboose, steam locomotive, Santa Fe caboose, and historic tank and box cars. Free admission runs Friday through Sunday. The caboose has been converted into a small library. Richard, the curator, leads an engaging Lantern Training School program and provides expert commentary on request. A wide grassy area across the street works well for post-visit picnics.
