Whoever designed this space had the right things in mind. There is shade and ample landscaping for parents to relax while kids play. The playground equipment is mostly climbing-based, instead of slides, which challenges kids to explore and test their boundaries with a safe cushiony surface below. Also, there are hoops to shoot around, but not the sort that serious basketball players would be interested in, all the better for a solid kids playground experience. Sandbox stocked with community shovels is my kid's favorite. Water fountains are nice - only complaint is that there are no public bathrooms.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with toddlers and early school-age kids who need a safe, contained outdoor play space in central Los Angeles. The climbing-first equipment engages active kids longer than a standard slide-heavy playground.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Bring your own water β€” the drinking fountains have a track record of being out of service
⏰No on-site bathrooms β€” use facilities nearby before heading in
🎟️Community shovels are provided at the sandbox, so no need to pack your own
πŸš—The gated entrance means toddlers can roam freely once inside

β€œMadison Park is a hidden gem in the city and feels like a cozy backyard for the neighborhood. It’s gated, which makes it feel especially safe and perfect for little ones to roam around freely. The playground has everything kids loveβ€”a sandbox, swings, a mini race track for remote cars, and basketball hoops in different sizes. Right next to it, there’s a lovely community garden that adds to the charm. It’s the kind of place where neighbors gather, kids make instant friends, and everyone feels welcome. Perfect for a family afternoon or just letting the kids burn some energy while you unwind.”

β€œThis park is so great and so needed for the neighborhood! We love it. The playground equipment is great for kids of a variety of ages. Our toddler has plenty to play with and there are spots he can't get to that are good for older kids. The only downside is the equipment, specifically the water fountain, is not being well maintained. It gets a lot of use from kids playing in the sand, which is so fun, but the parks department (or whoever is in charge) isn't fixing it. So other than the park needing more attention by officials, it's great.”

Overview

Madison Avenue Park is a gated, free neighborhood park with climbing-based equipment designed to challenge kids rather than just send them down slides. A sandbox with communal shovels, swings, a mini remote-car track, and kid-sized basketball hoops round out the play options. The fully fenced perimeter lets toddlers roam without bolting toward traffic. A community garden runs along one edge.
