1 / 3Railroad Museum of Long Island
đ North Fork, NY
Small and highly detailed railroad museum covering Long Island Rail Road history through steam locomotives, vintage passenger cars, interactive model train displays, and a rideable miniature train. Stools provided for toddlers to view displays.
Went here to see Santa for the holiday and was amazed at the beautiful train display and the attention to detail. Loved that their was a train ride outside for kids and adults and that you could explore old train cars. Very interactive. Free cookies and cocoa. A scavenger hunt paper that you can do as you walk through and look at the trains. Santa is generous with the candy post photo. The museum store is also nice for train enthusiast, young and old alike. Completely run by volunteers and they are all amazing! Very narrow space. Not wheelchair accessible. Parking is tight and limited. Oh and this is a totally free event and is only the first or second weekend in December each year. All other times, there is admission but it is minimal. Arrive early to see Santa and Mrs. Claus pull up to the parking lot.
đ Family Action Verdict
The standout choice for train-obsessed toddlers and preschoolers â museum stools let small kids reach the working model displays independently. Older kids and adults engage with the steam locomotives and interactive accessories. The 30â60 minute format pairs efficiently with a nearby LI Aquarium visit.

âAdorable old timey museum with fun and fascination for both kids and parents. Best for toddlers who can stand on the stools the museum provides to see their wonderful variety of working train sets and dioramas, with music, sound effects, lights, and interactive activities. Has indoor and outdoor spaces, a fun gift shop, and a cute train ride for all ages that makes three loops around the museum. The loveliest train enthusiasts work at this museum, constantly fixing up the trains, and everyone is so friendly. This place offers a wonderful, lowkey day of play that the whole family will love, at a very reasonable ticket price of $13 per adult, kids under 5 are free.â

âA fun place for sure. Not very big, but appropriately so. Really enjoyed the vintage model train running (I used to operate a 24" gauge model upstate). The indoor model display is world-class. There are many interactive accessories that can be easily triggered with a simple button push. My son loved it. Really a very unique place. I'm glad we went!â

âSmall but nice railroad museum, primarily on the surprisingly long history of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Displays include two steam locomotives, passenger and other train cars of the LIRR (some of fairly recent vintage), a rideable miniature train, and model train displays. The staff and volunteers were enthusiastic and helpful.â
