1 / 3St. John's Recreation Center
π Brooklyn, NY
Affordable community recreation center in Crown Heights offering swimming pools, basketball courts, fitness classes, and youth programs. Popular with families despite some maintenance issues.
A place where health and fun can be achieved. Many year's in the community, since 1992, when I first moved to Crown Heights. And it's giving the youth a safe space to be children.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families seeking affordable community activities in Crown Heights, especially for older kids and teens who can navigate occasional staff challenges. The center offers good variety including swimming, basketball, and fitness classes, but expect some facility maintenance issues and inconsistent customer service.

βThe free Zumba class on Saturdays at l10 am is great! Bring a lock as you arenβt allowed to leave your coats and bags out. Luckily the changing rooms are clean.β

βStaff is great. Pickleball is 3x week. That's a plus. Negatives are the roof leaks onto the gym floor in a few places, the water fountains don't work. Lighting is broken in gym.β

βUnfortunately, I had to minus three stars from my review which was posted nine months ago. Lately, the staff has been incompetent. I have been receiving misinformation, obnoxious attitudes and responses to my queries and it makes me feel apprehensive to communicate with the staff members. There are polite, and respectful staff members present. However, there are too many rude and dismissive ones to my liking. I shouldn't have to feel like I'm about to step on the battlefield when I approach a staff member with a query. Prior to the elections, I called the receptionist with a query about the time schedule and availability of the basketball gym. I was given confirmation that it was open and a specified time in which it will be closing. When I arrived, the staff members were in the process of remodeling the basketball gym for the upcoming elections. I respectfully expressed my frustration to a staff member about the miscommunication regarding the receptionist. Erroneous information was given to me on a few occasions, which caused me to waste my time and money. One of the staff members became hostile in tone and said, "A lot of people don't read! There are flyers in the lobby," etc. Perhaps his assertion is correct. However, I haven't been at the facility for a week. Therefore, I couldn't read any flyers that were recently posted. The next logical thing to do would be to speak to a receptionist. Shouldn't they be privy to information that the patrons are attempting to acquire? Instead of taking accountability or being professional and apologizing on behalf of his staff, he deflected and said, "We also send emails." I haven't received any email regarding my query. All of this is unnecessary as it is unprofessional to scold and disrespect the patrons, especially if the patron wasn't being disrespectful. This particular staff member, by the way, always seems to be disgusted about something and addressing people tumultuously. Enough is enough!β
