1 / 2The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood
π Central LA, CA
Netflix-owned historic Hollywood cinema opened in 1922, featuring Egyptian-themed decor, curated classic film programming, 70mm screenings, and post-screening Q&As with filmmakers. Reasonably priced concessions.
Some historic background: Graumanβs Egyptian Theatre, also known as Egyptian Hollywood and the Egyptian, is a historic movie theater located on Hollywood Boulevard. It opened in 1922, and in May 2020, Netflix bought the theater. Thatβs why you can see a huge red N (Netflixβs logo) by the entrance. Following a large restoration project, the theater re-opened in November 2023. This theater was built by Sid Grauman and Charles E. Toberman, who subsequently built the nearby El Capitan Theatre and Chinese Theatre. This theater cost $800,000 ($15 million in 2024) and took 18 months to construct. Another trivia tidbit: The Egyptian was the location of worldβs first film premiere, Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood, on Wednesday, October 18, 1922. As the film reportedly cost over $1 million ($18.8 million in 2024) to produce, the admission price to the premiere was $5 ($93.93 in 2024), yes, an outrageous amount of money for a movie ticket. Pro Tip: if you go to the Wikipedia page for the movie, they have all 2 hours and 12 minutes of it for streaming for free!! Now to the actual place. Gorgeous. The decoration and ambiance is incredible. The security guard at the entrance is super cool and the lobby has some historical artifacts and even free magazines. 10/10. Go check it out!
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with teens and older children who appreciate cinema history and classic films as a cultural experience. The intimate scale and curated programming reward film-curious families who want something more substantial than a multiplex.

βI saw a new 70MM print of πΎπ‘π€π¨π ππ£ππ€πͺπ£π©ππ§π¨ π€π π©ππ ππππ§π πππ£π (Director's Edition) at the Egyptian on August 16 at 7PM. The image was fantastic - huge, rock-solid steady, sharp, vibrant, and bright. (10/10) The sound was good, but not great. (7/10) I did not perceive much channel separation (both across the screen and in the surrounds) and the bass was not as impactful as I would have expected. I don't know if this was specific to this screening, this print, or the theater in general. I sat on Row 2, dead center. I was happy with my seats, but think that the viewing angle from Row 3 might be slightly preferable. Will return!β

βThe historic theater is a gem to see. It is a small theater compared to today. But they use original film as well as digital viewings. There are photos and information about the history of the theater. The concession were very reasonably priced. They feature themes of what is showing, so it may not be whats current at the main stream theaters.β

βWent to a showing of rear window at this iconic theatre. Beautifully renovated after Netflix's purchase, this was one of my all time best movie theatre experiences. Reasonably priced concessions, beautiful auditorium and an introduction from the usher which really makes watching a movie feel like an eventβ

Overview
The Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard opened in 1922 and was purchased by Netflix in 2020. Beautifully renovated, it screens original film prints alongside digital viewings, with a focus on classics, specialty series, and signature 70mm presentations. Post-screening filmmaker conversations and themed series programming make each visit an event rather than a standard cinema trip. The lobby displays historical photographs and information about the theater's century-long history.
