“Cropsey tended to autumnal colors, and even this scene must be late summer, judging by the foliage. Long before this site came to be dominated by the Bridge it provided the citizenry with a vista of the Hudson heading out to see and all that lay beyond. Near features come in for detailed treatment, in the foliage and beaches on Long Island. Note even the shadows beginning to reach over the artist's shoulder.”
