1 / 2L.I.C. - ICE
π Queens, NY
Small ice rink in Long Island City running structured hockey programs from Skate to Play through Mites competitive teams. Patient coaches, intimate class sizes, and seasonal sessions year-round.
This place is the best for skate and hockey beginner. Both of my boys canβt skate but after the 4th lesson, they are able to do it without issue. Lucia, the lady that runs the program is nice and super helpful. Parking can be difficult at times as it is street parking so get there earlier. Highly recommend it if your kids wants to dip their toes into hockey. Best of all, every end of the lesson comes with free donuts for the kids, canβt beat that.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 4-8 taking their first steps on ice. The patient coaching staff and structured progression from pure skating through to game play gives beginners a genuine foundation rather than just a recreational skate. Street-only parking means arriving early is non-negotiable, especially on lesson days.

βMy 8yo kiddo doing learn to play here. I was concerned about the size of the rink but itβs totally fine and sufficient for kids to do drills and scrimmage. Classes are relatively small and intimate. His coach is really engaged. He makes learning to skate/play super fun. Not just a dude who happens to be good at hockey. My kiddo really enjoys the sport now and I think itβs at least partly due to his coach and LIC Ice.β

βMy son no longer plays hockey but I am extremely grateful for the experience at LIC ICE. When my husband told me he signed up our son at age 4 for hockey I thought he was joking. At age 6, our son can skate independently very quickly with confidence. The coaches and director have a lot of patience for the kids. Itβs a tight knit community. When my other son turns 4, we will be back again.β

Overview
L.I.C. - ICE offers a progressive hockey pathway for children starting at age 4: Skate to Play, Learn to Play, Young Guns, and Mites. The smaller rink creates tight-knit class environments where coaches engage individually with each child. Off-ice training and ice rental round out the offering. Kids receive a donut at the end of each lesson session.
