1 / 3New Plaza Cinema
π Manhattan, NY
Manhattan's only independent cinema north of 14th Street, operating as a non-profit at Macaulay Honors College. Weekend screenings focus on foreign and art house films, occasionally with post-film Q&As.
I feel like Iβve discovered a secret hideaway in the city . Youβll be seeing more of me no doubt . This spot features A great curated list of movies shown each week at a reasonable price which sometimes even includes a q&a afterward with the director . Nice quiet atmosphere for people who love movies .
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with teenagers or older children who have a genuine appetite for foreign and art house cinema. The programming is sophisticated and the experience is stripped back β no concessions, basic seating, small screen. Younger children or families expecting a standard multiplex experience will find it a poor fit.

βLOVE NEW PLAZA CINEMA. Art cinema and classic movies are screened on the Upper West side! The programing is exquisite. And the theatergoers exciting and fun. This is a theater that appreciates and nurtures Independent Movies. A must go!β

βSo excited to have this wonderful option! Lovely little theater, amazing film choices. The volunteers are most helpful and friendly. Great event tonight - Rachel, Rachel.β

βFirst time viewing a movie at new plaza cinema. The movies shown are wonderful, usually foreign films. This little theater is very old. Seats are somewhat uncomfortable, no place to put a drink or bottle. Screen is small in comparison to other theaters. I wish they would clean up the room some. There are garbage cans around the theater and a desk in the corner. Felt like I was in someoneβs messy office. It was a little disconcerting. How does a theater run without selling any drinks or snacks? Youβre watching a movie thatβs close to 3 hours and have to sit there thirsty. A small concession stand is definitely needed. The movies chosen are the best part.β

Overview
New Plaza Cinema runs weekend screenings in a small intimate theater on West 67th Street, curated around foreign, independent, and classic films. The non-profit operation is volunteer-run with enthusiastic programming. Screenings occasionally include director Q&As. The space is up two flights of stairs with no elevator, seating is basic, and no concessions are sold β bring your own water bottle for longer films.
