1 / 2La Brea Tar Pits and Museum
📍 Central LA, CA
La Brea Tar Pits features real Ice Age fossil exhibits including dire wolves and mammoths, outdoor active tar pits, a working fossil lab with scientists on-site, and free outdoor grounds exploration.
I had some time to kill before my flight and decided to visit the La Brea Tar Pits. I’m so glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they offer luggage storage, which made the visit even easier. The staff at the front desk were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The museum itself took about an hour to explore. I visited on a school day, so there were several field trips happening, but it didn’t take away from the experience at all. In fact, it felt like a fun reminder of visiting museums as a kid. I really enjoyed learning about the history and watching scientists actively at work, uncovering fossils in real time—it was fascinating to see science happening right in front of you. Exploring the outdoor grounds around the museum was also a highlight. Overall, the La Brea Tar Pits made for a great stop in LA and was a perfect way to spend a few extra hours before heading to the airport. Highly recommended.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 5 and up who enjoy hands-on science with a discovery feel. The active fossil lab and outdoor tar pits make the science tangible rather than passive. The compact size — about 1 hour for most families — makes it a realistic half-day stop rather than a full-day commitment.

“We went during Free For All Museum Day and it has a sizable collection on display with many skeletons of past animals fallen into the nearby tar pits. The theater was closed the day we went (may be due to the crowds for the free day admission). The museum can be seen as quick or slow as you like, and the surrounding outside tar pits were also fun to find around the grounds. All the outside tar pits and grounds around the museum are free to walk through even if you're not planning to enter the museum. The viewable pits are fenced off and do bubble up which you can actually smell from the pits when up close. Thank you for allowing free admission for this year's Free For All Museum Day. We are so appreciative for you welcoming us to the museum ☺️”

“I visited the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum with my five-year-old and our friends and their kids. We’re from Michigan, and even our friends—who are local—had never been, so it was a first for all of us. The tar pits outside are fascinating (and a little wild to see in the middle of the city), and the mammoths inside were a huge hit with the kids. The exhibits are engaging without being overwhelming, and it’s easy to move through at a comfortable pace with younger kids. There’s plenty of space outside for them to explore and burn off energy too. Definitely recommend for parents looking for something educational that still feels fun and manageable. We all left glad we went.”

“Museum was very nice. Got to see things I only see on TV. Beautiful big dinosaurs. Bones are persevered perfectly and set up on display with descriptions and there stories. So cool for whole family to enjoy.”
