American Cinematheque
π Central LA, CA
Repertory cinema organization operating the 1922 Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. Programs classic films, retrospectives, film noir festivals, and filmmaker Q&As. Membership reduces per-ticket cost significantly.
Classic Hollywood at its best. American Cinematheque combines Hollywood's 95 year-old Egyptian Theatre and the 75 year-old Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The Egyptian was built in 1922 by Sid Grauman and held Hollywood's very first Red Carpet premier event. Grauman then sold the Egyptian and built the Chinese Theatre and the El Capitan a few blocks west from the Egyptian on Hollywood Blvd. Google American Cinematheque, Egyptian Theatre or Aero Theatre and you'll get to the same results. Membership is tax-deductible and tickets are $7 instead of $11 per ticket and include 4 free vouchers, free member-only screenings, pre-sales and member priority check-in for big events. Volunteer openings always available.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with older children and teenagers who have a genuine interest in film history or world cinema. The programming is curatorial rather than commercial β expect classic Hollywood, international arthouse, and themed series rather than current releases.

βBest "deal" in LA if you can get to any of their theaters/showings. I renewed in October and have already gotten my $$ worth in members-only screenings. This place is where a good portion of cinephiles hang. I wish they had more concession items but other than that, a great place for movie magic.β

βIf Yelp allowed half star increments I would rate 2.5 stars; the difference is split between 5 stars for film programming but 1 star for customer service. The AC is showing Fallen Angels by Wong Kar Wai: the screening page does not say whether the original or the director's cut will be shown. I sent an email asking which version would be screened, and they responded by telling me to look at the runtime to figure it out, or in other words they didn't answer my question and told me to do it myself. It is terrible customer service to not answer a customer question; even if the AC or intern who answered didn't know, just say you don't know yet. I responded by saying I didn't appreciate this evasion of an answer, that it was bad customer service, and they doubled down telling me to contact the distributor. I work at a movie theater and I always A: answer the question, or B: ask a higher up if I don't know the answer, or C: if no one knows yet tell them that but that we can get back to them soon. Abysmal customer service.β

βWe were let into a movie that we didn't have a ticket for and not told we were at the wrong theater for the film we did have a ticket for. I asked them why they didn't tell us and why they let us in one we didn't have a ticket for. The official response was: "For future reference, the event location is always listed on our website and in your ticket confirmation email. Best,The AC Team" So basically, they'll scan anything and not check so do what you will with that info!β
